Week in Review (June 2-8)

It was, as usual, a busy week here at First Arkansas News. Sad Sack, of course, started out as a comic strip character character created by Sgt. George Baker who entertained troops during World War II as he was constantly humiliated and thrown into one ridiculous situation after another. The OTR episode offered up for your listening pleasure this …

Weekend OTR: Wings to Victory — Lt. Roddy Johns (Howard Duff)

There’s just something about American World War II-era entertainment, isn’t there?
Some of the shows from that era were straight-up propaganda while others merely heaped on the patriotism in an attempt to boost morale and paint the Axis as the embodiment of pure evil. Wings to Victory was one of those gung-ho radio programs that was put out there to boost morale and gain recruits. The stories were based on military reports, but the names of the players were changed and there was — no doubt — more than a little …
