Don Harp dies

The word got out on Facebook earlier today that Don Harp, the oldest son of the founders of Springdale-based Harps Food Stores, died this morning.
Those reports were confirmed this afternoon. Harp ran the company from the late 1960s until 1994 when his brother, Gerald, took over as president. In 2000, current Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Roger Collins, took over as president. In 2001, the company’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan purchased all remaining shares of stock in the grocery store chain from the Harp family and managers, making the store …

The smallest Walmart in the world opened Friday

A one-of-a-kind Walmart opened on Friday in Fayetteville — a 3,500-square-foot store located in the Garland Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
AdAge.com mentioned last month that a 10,000-square-foot Walmart would open on the UA campus. According to a story by Fayetteville Flyer, the Walmart On Campus store is considerably smaller than the size originally estimated. Indeed, the 3,500-square-foot facility is considerably smaller than a Walmart Supercenter that typically comes in at 185,000-square-feet.
