Retron 5 powered by Android?

The lucky folks over at Engadget caught up with Hyperkin this week at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) and reported that the Retron 5 sounds even better than it did when we at First Arkansas News wrote about it a few weeks ago.
For those unaware of the Hyperkin Retron 5, here’s a summary. The retro console boasts five cartridge slots and will play cartridges made for nine different systems — Nintendo Game Boy Advance (GBA), Sega Genesis, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Nintendo Famicom (Japanese), Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Game boy …

Take that Super Nintendo on the road

Yes, just think about it — the ability to take all those classic Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) games on the road and play them whenever the mood strikes.
There would be no more wires and no more being tethered to a television set when you wanted to revisit the fun-filled library that was abundant on the SNES. That’s all very possible — for the most part — thanks to a dandy little system called the Yobo FC-16 Go.
The FC-16 Go is one of those Chinese knockoffs that have hit the …

Need a new system for those NES and SNES games?

There’s a problem inherent in retrogaming — those old systems do tend to wear out over time, don’t they?
What can you do? You can, of course, head to eBay and replace a broken system, or you could buy something that’s new that emulates an older console.
A lot of companies make those new system that play old games, but how well do they actually work? The prices on them tend to be low, but not so low that you’re willing to throw away some cash on a piece of junk, right? …

Atari called it a Jaguar but it was still a dog

Well, here it is — the Atari Jaguar. The console that actually made me so angry I boxed it up a few years ago and traded it in at the Game X Change in Springdale for some stuff for my Sega Genesis.
Angry? Yes, the Jaguar provoked that reaction from more than a few people. While the system does have its share of fans and Songbird Productions has done a fine job putting together some great games for this dead system, it’s hard to recommend it to anyone.
Why? The software library …

Super NES — a 16-bit classic

Every year around this time, it’s easy to start thinking of great video game systems of the past.
A lot of us who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s wished for, hoped for and asked Santa Claus to deliver the latest video game console on Christmas morning. Back in 1991, the Super Nintendo (also called the Super NES or SNES). That system came out in August 1991 as Nintendo really needed a console that would do two things — build on the success of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and …

Help! My HDTV set hates my classic video game console!

Just ask any fan of classic video game consoles out there — getting those vintage systems to communicate with new HDTV sets can be a chore.
Oddly, that Atari 2600 looks OK on those snazzy, new sets but a lot of other systems look, well, bad.
Dave Mrozek, a computer programmer, established the Video Game Critic about 10 years ago and has written about 3,500 video game reviews on that site over the past decade. He’s a self proclaimed fan of systems from the Atari 2600 all the way through the Nintendo …
