Sega Dreamcast — why on earth did this fail?

The Sega Dreamcast is, quite simply, one of my favorite video game consoles produced.
When it came out in 1998, there was nothing that could touch it in terms of screen resolution, three-dimensional gaming and outright fun. By 2001, Sega had withdrawn from the North American console market entirely and has pretty well concentrated on software development for other systems since then.
So, what on earth happened to this great little console? To understand that, an understanding of video game history is in order.
The Sega Dreamcast was the first 128-bit system on …

Week in review (1/23-1/30)

My, but last week was busy here at First Arkansas News.
We’ve had everything from the announcement of the formation of a new adversing group to some big news about Linux to some political wrangling. If you missed out on some of those stories, here’s your chance to play a bit of catch up so you can be on top of the stories that we’ve covered this week.
As our regular visitors probably know, we run these “week in review” posts regularly. Ah, but there’s a better way to make sure you …

Sega CD — good idea or a complete mess?

History has not been kind to the Sega CD add-on for the time-tested Genesis.
Some have pointed out the tons of shovelware available for the system, while others have acknowledged a lot of junk games were made for it but there are some classics buried in the library for the system. The Sega CD has been blamed for everything from ruining Sega’s future in the video game industry to be an absolute waste of money.
Regardless of what people think of the Sega CD, there are a few facts about the unit …

Atari called it a Jaguar but it was still a dog

Well, here it is — the Atari Jaguar. The console that actually made me so angry I boxed it up a few years ago and traded it in at the Game X Change in Springdale for some stuff for my Sega Genesis.
Angry? Yes, the Jaguar provoked that reaction from more than a few people. While the system does have its share of fans and Songbird Productions has done a fine job putting together some great games for this dead system, it’s hard to recommend it to anyone.
Why? The software library …

A new, portable Genesis for less than $40?

Ah, the good old Sega Genesis.
What a great system. Click here to read more about it.
Wouldn’t it be great to be able to take that old system on the road and play those great 16-bit titles? Sega did make that dream possible in 1995 with the release of the Sega Nomad in 1995, but there are a couple of problems with that system of which anyone shopping for one needs to be aware.
First of all, the Nomad came out near the end of the Genesis’ life, thus making the system …

Sega Genesis — kicking off the 16-bit wars

Ah, the famed  Sega Genesis — the system that challenged the formidable Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and ushered in the 16-bit console gaming era in earnest.
By the time the Genesis arrived on the North American scene in 1989 (it was released as the Mega Drive in Japan in 1988), the Nintendo Entertainment System had been around for four years and was starting to show its age. The company did try to take a run at the NES with the Sega Master System, but didn’t achieve much success — Nintendo was …

Retrogaming in style with the Atari 2600

Yes the time has come to start up a series on those obsolete gaming consoles of which a number of us are still fond.
Why is now the time to start a series about those old machines that many of us grew up with and still enjoy? Well, let me tell you a little story. Last week, we got a copy of the fantastic Fable IIIfor the Xbox 360(and, yes, that fine RPG does live up to the hype). When you get a new game, what do you want to do? …

Help! My HDTV set hates my classic video game console!

Just ask any fan of classic video game consoles out there — getting those vintage systems to communicate with new HDTV sets can be a chore.
Oddly, that Atari 2600 looks OK on those snazzy, new sets but a lot of other systems look, well, bad.
Dave Mrozek, a computer programmer, established the Video Game Critic about 10 years ago and has written about 3,500 video game reviews on that site over the past decade. He’s a self proclaimed fan of systems from the Atari 2600 all the way through the Nintendo …
