Benton says ‘so long’ to Mayor Holland

Benton residents gathered Tuesday at the Gene Moss Building at Tyndall Park for a reception honoring departing Mayor Rick Holland.
Holland lost his mayoral race in a runoff against challenger David Mattingly last month. Holland was Benton’s mayor for two back-to-back terms — a rarity in a city that has a tendency to change its mayors frequently. Holland, in an interview with First Arkansas News, said he hasn’t quite figured out what he’s going to do come January when he leaves the Mayor’s office. However he told the about 300 people …

The Winner’s Circle — Joy Ballard, Saline County Collector

The Green Party of Arkansas fielded 13 candidates across the state in the Nov. 2 election, but only one of them won an office — incoming Saline County Collector Joy Ballard.
Ballard said she chose the Green Party as part of a strategy that left her as the only candidate printed on the ballot in a race full of write-in hopefuls. Welcome to the Winner’s Circle

Because we know that our readers just can’t get enough politics, First Arkansas News is rolling out a series of posts that we like to call The Winner’s Circle posts here.

The Winner’s Circle — Dennis Milligan, Saline County Circuit Clerk

“Officially, my name is ‘Mr. Clerk,’” said Dennis Milligan after the Tuesday elections. “But my friends can just call me ‘Circuit.’”
Milligan is in a jovial mood these days, and why not? He defeated incumbent circuit clerk Doug Kidd, making him one of the Republican candidates swept into office in Arkansas during last week’s historic elections.
Historic? Yep. Arkansas was represented in Congress by five Democrats and one Republican prior to Tuesday and is now has four Republicans and two Democrats in the U.S. House and Senate. Republicans won three of the …

Arkansas Republicans extend lead in state constitutional offices

While most of the Arkansas elections were decided last night, there were still a few offices where more returns were needed to figure out which way they’d go.
The lieutenant governor, secretary of state and land commissioners were deemed too close to call late last night, but it appears some winners have emerged today.
In the secretary of state’s race, Republican Mark Martin has defeated Democrat Pat O’Brien. Martin rolled here in Saline County with 19,619 votes to O’Brien’s 14,634.
In the land commissioner’s race, Republican John Thurston has beaten Democrat L.J. Bryant. …
