Saline County turned 175 years old today.
Yes, indeed. The county was founded on Nov. 2, 1835, which was just a few months before Arkansas joined the Union in June 1836. Saline County was named for the saltwater springs in the area.
Regardless of what common sense might dictate, the name of the county is pronounced “suh-leen.” If you go with the common pronunciation of “say-leen,” that will mark you as an outsider and we’ll shun you. We might make fun of you, too. Keep that in mind.

Yes, it’s time once again for Old Fashioned Day in downtown Benton.
This is the 36th year for the event, meaning that those of us who grew up in town consider the event as the unofficial beginning of fall (yes, I know we entered fall last month, but this is Arkansas — stays hot through at least mid-October). Old Fashioned Day can be considered rather like a crafts fair with plenty of local musicians, food carts selling the typical unhealthy (but very tempting) stuff and politicians wandering around here and there.
