Benton says ‘so long’ to Mayor Holland

Benton residents gathered Tuesday at the Gene Moss Building at Tyndall Park for a reception honoring departing Mayor Rick Holland.
Holland lost his mayoral race in a runoff against challenger David Mattingly last month. Holland was Benton’s mayor for two back-to-back terms — a rarity in a city that has a tendency to change its mayors frequently. Benton gets a new mayor

The runoff results are in and Benton Mayor Rick Holland is out.
According to unofficial results from Saline County, challenger David Mattingly defeated Holland got 2,526 votes and Holland received 1,215 in Tuesday’s runoff election. It’s been a rough year for incumbents, indeed.
Holland and Mattingly were forced into the runoff after the Nov. 2 elections. There were three candidates in Benton’s mayoral race — Holland, Mattingly and Don White. Holland led the pack with 41.32 percent of the votes and Mattingly finished second with 28.49 percent.

Big night for Arkansas Republicans

Arkansas entered the day as a state what was represented primarily by Democrats in Washington.
Now, Republicans dominate the state’s congressional delegation.
Here’s how it went down:
* In a hotly contested Senate race, Republican John Boozman defeated Democrat Blanche Lincoln. The final vote hasn’t been tallied yet, but that race was called in Boozman’s favor as soon as the polls closed.
Lincoln, the incumbent senator, angered Arkansas voters with her support of health care reform. The voters responded as expected, leaving Boozman as the first Republican senator from Arkansas since Tim Hutchinson embarrassed …
