Root System

The Rev. Natasha Murray-Norman has delivered a set of inspirational, unique sermons since she arrived at Parkview United Methodist Church in Benton at the end of June.
Her sermon on Aug. 28 was no exception as she dove into the Book of Matthew and built a sermon around the concept of a deep, enduring root system. By the way, you can hear the good pastor for yourself by paying a visit to Parkview at 10:45 a.m. on a Sunday morning. The church is located at 514 N. Border, right across the …

Becoming disciples

The Rev. Natasha Murray normal of Parkview United Methodist Church in Benton, Ark., was unable to present her sermon on Aug. 21.
Luckily, Terry Brumbelow stepped in and delivered a sermon on what it means to become a disciple of Christ and how to work on becoming one. Give it a listen and you might learn a thing or two. The pastor was back at the pulpit on the following Sunday, but the congregation was grateful for Brumbelow’s ability to step in and deliver a great sermon on short notice.
If you’re …

Living a Salt and Light Lifestyle, Part 1

The Rev. Natasha Murray-Norman of Parkview United Methodist Church in Benton is clearly a fan of the “series” approach to preaching.
She started at Parkview at the end of June and has, since then, put together a couple of series. The second one, Living a Salt and Light Lifestyle, was a two-parter that started on Aug. 7 and ended on Aug. 14. The first part of that series — which was centered around the “salt” concept — is posted and ready for your listening pleasure. The second part — which dealt …

Parkview Methodists want to know if you’re ready to rumble

The Rev. Natasha Murray-Norman assumed her role as pastor at Parkview United Methodist Church in Benton at the end of June and has completed five sermons since then.
She wrapped up her first series — a three-parter entitled Ready to Rumble — on July 24. The series is all about actively engaging in spiritual warfare against evil in the world and being a passionate follower of Christ rather than a passive one. The question, of course, has to do with how successful the good reverend is in inspiring her congregation. Has …

Spring and Wye Mountain

Today was the first day of spring and could there possible be a better way to spend it than to take a bunch of kids to the Wye Mountain Daffodil Festival?
The Parkview United Methodist Church youth group in Benton, Ark., made the trip to Wye Mountain on Sunday to welcome in spring after a cold, miserable winter (we’re not used to snow in central Arkansas and we got plenty of it this year). This season marked the 33rd year of the Daffodil Festival at Wye Mountain, which is located a …

Those can-do youths at Parkview United Methodist

The youth group at Parkview United Methodist Church in Benton, Ark., is small, scrappy and ready to do some great things this year.
Let’s see what they have in store, shall we? First of all, the group is looking to grow and is hoping to attract more members. Who can join the Parkview Youth? Anyone who is in at least sixth grade.
How can one join? Just show up at an event (more on that in a bit), show some interest in joining and the group will handle the rest. The group …

Benton folds in first round of Class 6A playoffs

It’s official — the Benton Panthers are out in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs after visiting Van Buren tonight and losing 41-14.
Still, it’s worth mentioning that the 3-7 Panthers just made it into the playoffs this year. Also, this is the first playoffs appearance by Benton in the past three years.
Furthermore, new head coach Scott Nethery pledged at the first of the season to turn the program around this year. Considering the Panthers finished 1-9 last year and 2-8 the season before that, perhaps Nethery has achieved …

Reporter’s Notebook: Fall Festival with the Methodists

As I’ve mentioned a time or two, my wife, children and I are members of Parkview United Methodist Church in Benton.
One of the greatest things about that particular church is that it’s members go out of their way to put on some spectacular events. At Parkview, some of the most enjoyable events of the year happen around Christmas, Mother’s Day and, yes, the fall festival held prior to Halloween every year.
This year — like every year — children showed up in droves to play games, win candy and generally have …

Reporter’s Notebook: Old Fashioned Day

BENTON — Jamie Smith posted a reporter’s notebook earlier this week about the big Bike, Blues and BBQ shindig in Fayetteville.
I thought that was a great idea. Such a great idea, in fact, that I figured I’d swipe it and post a reporter’s notebook of my very own about Old Fashioned Day in Benton.
Old Fashioned Day is a big deal here in Benton and was held today for the 36th year. In addition to giving Saline County residents (and some out-of-area folks, too) together for a day of fun, music, …
