D-Day OTR: This is Our Enemy

Here’s a dandy bonus for the tens of fans of our Weekend OTR series in observance of D-Day. The allies, of course, invaded Normandy on June 6, 1944 — an operation that set the table for the surrender of Germany on April 29, 1945.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the World War II era is how the United States and her allies viewed the Axis powers. The enemy was outright detested and rare were the suggestions that the Axis powers and her citizens deserved of mercy or understanding — …

Weekend OTR: Crime Does Not Pay

It’s Friday night once again and you know what that means — its time for another dandy installment of our Weekend OTR series.
What’s on tap for the weekend? We’ve got a crime drama for you — a piece of Golden Age of Radio goodness called Crime Doesn’t Pay. This one just seemed appropriate right now, considering the shenanigans of former Arkansas State Treasurer Martha “Pie Fan” Shoffner. Remember — “crime does not pay” isn’t just a slogan. It’s an outright truism.

Before you listen to this week’s program that, why not take …

Memorial Day OTR — the Great Gildersleeve

Well, it seems that Google News had a problem with old time radio shows appearing on a news site.
So, I stopped running our time honored Weekend OTR series a few months ago in hopes of keeping the folks at Google News happy. It didn’t work. So, to heck with them.
Yes, Weekend OTR is back and will remain here at First Arkansas News. What’s in store for this weekend? How about an episode of the Great Gildersleeve with an appropriate Memorial Day theme?

Christmas OTR — Mel Blanc Plays Santa

Everyone remembers Mel Blanc, right?
Sure you do. He was the guy who provided the voices for such famed Warners Brothers cartoon characters as Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Foghorn Leghorn, Pepe Le Pew, the Tasmanian Devil and the Roadrunner (that “beep, beep” was all Blanc, folks).
Blanc also had an old time radio show for a couple of years. It just makes sense that he’d make it radio, seeing how his vocal talents helped in the proliferation of cartoon characters that were so successful they’re still popular today. Truth be told, Blanc …
