Holy smokes! Malzahn headed to ASU

Arkansas State University (ASU) fans have a great reason to celebrate — Auburn Offensive Coordinator Gus Malzahn has been introduced as the new head football coach of the Red Wolves.
If that announcement didn’t come as a bit of a shock, then you’re either not a Arkansan or haven’t paid attention to the drama that surrounded the University of Arkansas Razorbacks football program back when Houston Nutt was the head coach. Also, it’s more than a bit intriguing that Malzahn squelched rumors he was taking over as head coach at Vanderbilt …

Garrick McGee headed to UAB

Our loss is their gain — Arkansas Offensive Coordinator Garrick McGee has been named head coach of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
McGee has been the offensive coordinator at the University of Arkansas for the past two seasons. It’s worth mentioning that the Razorbacks went 10-2 in the regular season both this year and last and that the Hogs led the SEC in passing offense this year. It should also be noted that Arkansas Head Coach Bobby Petrino has issued a statement congratulating McGee on his new job at …

It’s official — Hugh Freeze heading to Ole Miss

Archie Manning — an Ole Miss alum, former quarterback for the New Orleans Saints and co-chair of the search committee to find Mississippi’s new coach — announced that Arkansas State University Hugh Freeze will be taking the coaching job that opened up after Houston Nutt resigned in November.
Freeze led ASU to a 10-2 record this year and an appearance in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Jan. 8. Nutt, meanwhile, led Ole Miss to a 2-10 record with no Southeastern Conference (SEC) wins and victories over only Fresno State and Southern Illinois. …

Arkansas to the Cotton Bowl? Freeze to Ole Miss?

Everyone in the state of Arkansas who hasn’t been living under a rock has already heard the news by now, but we thought we’d repeat it  — the Arkansas Razorbacks will face the Kansas State Wildcats in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 6 at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.
Both are two-loss teams. Arkansas closed out the season ranked 6th in the nation and Kansas State is ranked 8th. It’s worth mentioning that Arkansas is not heading for a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) game as only two teams per conference can appear …

Nutt sacked

After a couple of wobbly seasons, Ole Miss officials announced today that this year will be the last one with Houston Nutt as head football coach.
“Our goal is to compete for championships, and we are not making progress in that regard,” said University of Mississippi Athletic Director Boone at a press conference on Monday afternon. “It’s time for our team to have new leadership and a new direction.”
Nutt coached at the University of Arkansas for 10 seasons and was hired by Ole Miss in 2008. In 2008 and 2009, Ole …

Malzahn sticking with Auburn

Well, here’s one for the “don’t count your chickens until they hatch” file — Gus Malzahn is, evidently, staying on at Auburn as offensive coordinator.
For the past week, we’ve heard plenty of speculation that Malzahn was going to accept the head coaching job at Vanderbilt, thus replacing Robbie Caldwell. In fact, a Washington Post article yesterday flat out said that Malzahn had accepted the job. Add to that the Rivals.com report stating that Auburn Quarterback Cam Newton sent something out on Twitter saying that Malzahn was heading to Vanderbilt, and …

It’s official — Arkansas heading to the Sugar Bowl

People have speculated about it for over a week, but now it’s official — the Arkansas Razorbacks will face the Ohio Buckeyes in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Jan. 4.
That’s a great thing for the Razorbacks. The program was a complete mess when Houston Nutt fled town and wound up in Ole Miss back in 2007. The Hogs found an upgrade in Head Coach Bobby Petrino, who has the team in its first bowl championship series bowl since the BCS was formed in 1998.
Yes, Petrino took a team …

Hey, Ole Miss — still in love with Nutt?

My, how things change.
Just three years ago, Arkansans were described as some of the worst fans in the world. Why? Fans griped regularly about Houston Nutt — the coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks at the time — and were described in the national media as being everything from insane to ungrateful.
The 2007 season, indeed, was contentious. For the most part, the only national press the Razorbacks received centered on disputes between Nutt and allegedly insane Hogs fans. Meanwhile, Nutt turned in another 4-4 SEC record, made it to another minor …

An historic day for the Razorbacks

After waltzing to a couple of easy wins over two of those “beat ’em up” teams the Razorbacks routinely pad the out-of-conference schedule with, Arkansas started off Southeastern Conference play with a bang by beating Georgia on Saturday, 31-24.
That victory may, in fact, be the most significant win for head coach Bobby Petrino thus far. Why? Before Saturday, Arkansas had only beaten once Georgia since joining the SEC in 1992. That’s right — the Hogs beat Georgia 20-10 back in 1993 when Danny Ford was the head coach and lost …
