The 2011 Northwest Arkansas Homeless Census is complete and preliminary results are not good. The number of homeless in NWA has risen to more than 2,000 people, up 36 percent from 1,287 two years ago.

Well, the weather was at it again. The day before some groundhog named Phil is supposed to determine our seasonal fate, yet another bad winter storm hit Northwest Arkansas. The snow totals are as little as one inch near Fort Smith and as much as about 10 inches in northwest Benton County. The problem is, ice fell before the snow-making the roads even more treacherous. Schools and many businesses closed. Flights to and from many area airports were canceled.

A census completed last week will share just how many that is, and coordinators think the number of homeless people in Benton and Washington County will increase drastically from the last census.
