Notice anything different at ‘First Arkansas News?’

As our tens of fans have no doubt noticed, First Arkansas News has gone through a few changes lately. The most noticeable development is that we’re actually updating the site again.
Yes, from July 24 last year through March 12 this year, there were no new posts at First Arkansas News. What happened? Site founder/owner/editor/etc. Ethan C. Nobles (that would be me) got sick around November 2011 and wound up shifting priories — as I do a lot of freelance writing, I concentrated on what actually paid well. Believe it or …

Holiday OTR: 3 Christmas shows

Merry Christmas to everyone. We at First Arkansas News have a little something special planned for you this weekend — not the typical, single episode that we typically feature in our Weekend OTR series, but three old time radio shows.
Why? Because it’s Christmas and that means its time to do something a little extra for our readers. So, get ready to click away and get absolutely lost in the joy of the season. By the way, it’s come to our attention that the audio players we use work best with …

Lum and Abner coming to First Arkansas News — maybe

Anyone who’s a regular visitor to First Arkansas News knows that we’ve dedicated a fair amount of space to old time radio (OTR).
We post a new OTR episode every week in our Weekend OTR series and one of the first major articles we published was one about Lum and Abner — a comedy duo that was prominent on radio stations around the country from 1931 to 1955, made a few movies and was so popular that a whole town changed its name to more closely associate itself with the program …

Mena to host Lum and Abner Festival in June

Yes this makes two Lum and Abner-related articles in two days.
Still, there’s a lot going on regarding the Arkansas comedy team — this year marks both the 80th anniversary of the Lum and Abner show airing and the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Pine Ridge, Ark. For a little history on the program, make sure to visit our synopsis of what those Arkansas boys did in establishing their successful old time radio franchise if you’d like to learn more about them.
On June 3-4, fans of the show will gather …

‘Jot ‘Em Down Journal’ available soon in audio format

Donnie Pitchford, president of the National Lum and Abner Society, announced that his group is converting back issues of the Jot ‘Em Down Journal to an audio format.
What’s the Jot ‘Em Down Journal? It’s a newsletter that was published by the Society from 1984 to 2007 and was all about Lum and Abner. It was, however, in a printed format exclusively until 1992 when Society Vice President Jim Brown started recording them in audio format and sending them to blind fans of the Lum and Abner program.
As amazing as it seems, …

Week in Review — March 28-April 3

Yes, it was another week full of excitement here at First Arkansas News.
We’ve written about everything from the president of the National Lum and Abner Society to a drug-selling mailman in the past few days, so it’s time for a review.
Prior to getting into that, let’s go over a couple of other things. First of all, we should have a big announcement to make on Monday Tuesday that could shake up the way we do things around here (and improve them). Make sure to stop in for that.
Second, we sure …

Donnie Pitchford guest on ‘The Saturday Night Show’ this weekend

Any old time radio fan needs to write out a reminder to listen to The Saturday Night Show this weekend (April 2) at 9:30 p.m. central on the Internet at YesterdayUSA.com.
Why? What goes on? “Uncle” Donnie Pitchford will be the guest on that show and, yes, he’ll be taking phone calls from listeners. Who is Pitchford? None other than the president of the National Lum & Abner Society. Pitchford is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to old time radio (OTR) and he has a particular fascination with the Lum …

National Lum and Abner Society has back issues of ‘Jot ‘Em Down Journal’ available

One of the first articles to appear here on First Arkansas News was one about Lum and Abner — a couple of old time radio comedians created by two Arkansas boys.
That post got quite a bit of attention, due in no small part to the assistance of Donald “Donnie” Pitchford, president of the National Lum and Abner Society. It’s hard to beat Pitchford’s knowledge of Lum and Abner, and the same can be said of a lot of members of the Lum and Abner Society.
The Lum and Abner Society published …
