Arkansas Republicans extend lead in state constitutional offices

While most of the Arkansas elections were decided last night, there were still a few offices where more returns were needed to figure out which way they’d go.
The lieutenant governor, secretary of state and land commissioners were deemed too close to call late last night, but it appears some winners have emerged today.
In the secretary of state’s race, Republican Mark Martin has defeated Democrat Pat O’Brien. Martin rolled here in Saline County with 19,619 votes to O’Brien’s 14,634.
In the land commissioner’s race, Republican John Thurston has beaten Democrat L.J. Bryant. …

Bryant, Thurston square off in land commissioner race

Believe it or not, the race for the Arkansas Commissioner of State Lands’ office has gotten a lot of attention this year.
That’s fairly rare when we’re talking about an office that is generally regarded as administrative in scope. However, Democrat LJ Bryant campaigned like the dickens during the primaries and attracted attention with his promises of using technology to make the office function better.

Perhaps the big election of the night was the Democratic primary runoff for U.S. Senate.
Incumbent Blanche Lincoln and Lt. Gov. Bill Halter have been flinging mud at each other for months now. Thankfully, that’s all over — Halter has conceded and Lincoln will fight to defend herself against challenger John Boozman, a Republican and 3rd District U.S. Representative.
One of …

Interview with Monty Davenport, Democrat running for Arkansas Commissioner of State Lands

We’ve already made a fuss over L.J. Bryant and now it’s time to hear from Monty Davenport.
Davenport, a state representative from Yellville, can’t run again for his current office due to term limits. So he’s running for land commissioner. Davenport faces a June 8 run-off election against L.J. Bryant and the winner of that race will go on to face Republican John Thurston in the November general election.
Bryant and Davenport both escaped the May 18 primary, leaving Democrat Mike Berg as the odd man out in that race.

Unique ideas in the land commissioner’s race

It’s worth mentioning that we don’t endorse candidates here at First Arkansas News.
Not yet, anyway.
Truth be told, it would be more like most of the people who write for this fine site to pick out candidates we don’t like and make fun of them.
So, why is there a picture of L.J. Bryant — a Democrat running for the Commissioner of State Lands office — here?
That’s actually pretty simple. For one thing, he got in touch with First Arkansas News and wanted to schedule an interview. We’ve only been around about …
