Immigration bill heading to Arkansas Legislature

It stirred up a bit of controversy, but House Bill 1013 is on its way to the Arkansas Legislature.
What is HB 1013? In short, it’s a bill that was introduced by State Rep. Jim Nickels (D-Sherwood) that will — if passed — give the state Contractors Licensing Board the authority to punish those contractors who knowingly employee people who aren’t in the country legally. State Legislature still talking about illegal immigrants

Last week the House Committee on State and Governmental Affairs considered HB 1013 which, if passed, will impose penalties on contractors who knowingly hire illegal immigrants to work on projects.
Specifically, HB 1013 — which is sponsored by State Rep. Jim Nickels (D-Sherwood) — would allow the Contractors Licensing Board to impose penalties on contractors who knowingly hire people who are not authorized to work in the United States. The bill further states that penalties would be imposed on contractors who knowingly hire subcontractors who hire illegals.

Arkansas unions riled up over illegal immigrants

A bill imposing penalties against contractors who knowingly hire illegal immigrants is due to go before a state House committee on Wednesday and some Arkansas unions have been asked to come to the state Capitol and show their support for it.
