Week in Review: June 23-29

First off, a happy Fourth of July holiday to everyone. It’s seems fairly obvious from the drop in site traffic that people are spending time with family and friends rather than slogging around on the Internet. That’s a good thing, ultimately. Speaking of the Fourth of July, make sure to stop by on the holiday as we’ll observe the holiday by posting a special old time radio show or two.
If you missed a few articles over the past few days, you’re in the right place to catch up on everything …

Apple iOS 7 — works better, looks horrible

Be careful what you wish for, for you may get it.
Yes, that’s an old proverb that has been attributed to St. Teresa of Avila and, well, a lot of other people. We’ll stick with the St. Teresa attribution because she’s fascinating.
Who coined that phrase doesn’t really matter so much as the fact that it may prove very true in the case of Apple iOS 7. Apple users (myself included) have howled about how boring Apple’s mobile operating system has become and have demanded change. I’ve got iOS 7 Beta 2 …

Switching from iPhone? Here’s a tip.

After a couple of years of owning an Apple iPhone 4, my wife decided it was time to pick up an Android. Specifically, she bought a Samsung Galaxy S4.
It’s an awesome phone, but there was one problem with it — she couldn’t receive any texts. A brief trip through the Apple Support Community revealed that a lot of people have had that problem when moving from the iPhone to something else.
After combing through the aforementioned Apple support forum and doing a few searches on Google, we wound up with a …

A quick note on 2013 WWDC

Apple’s yearly broo-ha-ha began yesterday, June 10.  Geared to the many fine folks that create the gazillion apps available for both the Mac and iPad/iPhone/iPod, many in tech media have been waiting for this conference to get an idea where Apple is headed.  More, to see if Apple can maintain its spot on the top of the tech mountain.  One presenter summed it up nicely by saying, “[Apple] can no longer innovate my arse.”  Sadly, the conference’s success will be rated by the stock market far more than the advances …

Motorola to make smartphone in the U.S.

Motorola announced on Thursday that it will release a new smartphone — the Moto X — in October.
Motorola officials have gone on at length about how advanced the Android-based phone will be. For example, Motorola claims the phone will be contextually aware of its surroundings and act accordingly — it can fire up a camera when pulled out of a pocket, behave differently when in a moving car, etc. It’s to be a high-end smartphone competing with the likes of the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S4. However, …

Fayetteville company makes trivia mobile, social

What do you get when you take trivia questions and put them in an iPhone app that sets up games with friends, family, coworkers and random opponents through Facebook?
The answer? Trivi.al, a pick-up-and-play brain teaser that its founders hope become as ubiquitous on mobile devices as Draw Something,  Words with Friends, etc. Trivi.al has only been available through the Apple App Store since June 21, so it’s too early to make any predictions about how the game will fare in the months to come.
Matt Hudson, however, is optimistic about the …

iPhone 4S — 4G or not?

Buried amongst all the talk of the new Apple iPad this week was news of the release of iOS 5.1.
What is significant about the new Apple operating system? Owners of the iPhone 4S who are AT&T customers and downloaded the update may have noticed the “3G” icon on their phones had been replaced with a “4G” icon. That’s right — the new update sure appears to turn the iPhone 4S into one that’s cruising the ultra-fast, next generation 4G data network.
There are a couple of questions surrounding the update — …
