The Razorbacks will finish 7-5 this fall. Count on it.

Major League Baseball is well underway, the National Basketball League is winding down and summer is just around the corner. So, naturally, it’s time for all true Arkansans to think about Razorbacks football in the fall, right?
Of course it is! This is Arkansas and that means we’re always interested in talking about how the Hogs will turn out in the upcoming season. That’s how things work around First Arkansas News and you’re in luck — it’s barely June and we stand ready to predict within an acceptable margin of error …

Holy smokes! Malzahn headed to ASU

Arkansas State University (ASU) fans have a great reason to celebrate — Auburn Offensive Coordinator Gus Malzahn has been introduced as the new head football coach of the Red Wolves.
If that announcement didn’t come as a bit of a shock, then you’re either not a Arkansan or haven’t paid attention to the drama that surrounded the University of Arkansas Razorbacks football program back when Houston Nutt was the head coach. Also, it’s more than a bit intriguing that Malzahn squelched rumors he was taking over as head coach at Vanderbilt …

It’s official — Hugh Freeze heading to Ole Miss

Archie Manning — an Ole Miss alum, former quarterback for the New Orleans Saints and co-chair of the search committee to find Mississippi’s new coach — announced that Arkansas State University Hugh Freeze will be taking the coaching job that opened up after Houston Nutt resigned in November.
Freeze led ASU to a 10-2 record this year and an appearance in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Jan. 8. Nutt, meanwhile, led Ole Miss to a 2-10 record with no Southeastern Conference (SEC) wins and victories over only Fresno State and Southern Illinois. …

Arkansas to the Cotton Bowl? Freeze to Ole Miss?

Everyone in the state of Arkansas who hasn’t been living under a rock has already heard the news by now, but we thought we’d repeat it  — the Arkansas Razorbacks will face the Kansas State Wildcats in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 6 at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.
Both are two-loss teams. Arkansas closed out the season ranked 6th in the nation and Kansas State is ranked 8th. It’s worth mentioning that Arkansas is not heading for a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) game as only two teams per conference can appear …

Nutt sacked

After a couple of wobbly seasons, Ole Miss officials announced today that this year will be the last one with Houston Nutt as head football coach.
“Our goal is to compete for championships, and we are not making progress in that regard,” said University of Mississippi Athletic Director Boone at a press conference on Monday afternon. “It’s time for our team to have new leadership and a new direction.”
Nutt coached at the University of Arkansas for 10 seasons and was hired by Ole Miss in 2008. In 2008 and 2009, Ole …

Tubby Smith to Arkansas?

Here we go — it’s been about a day since John Pelphrey was dismissed as the head basketball coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks and rumors are flying all over the place.
We’ve heard about the possibility of Missouri head coach Mike Anderson taking the job for a couple of weeks now and he has, of course, denied that he plans on going anywhere.
Meanwhile, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported today that Arkansas is close to hiring Minnesota coach Tubby Smith. What does Smith say? Of course, he said he doesn’t plan on …

Does Mitch Mustain still have a shot at the NFL?

Just when it looks like Mitch Mustain’s career has come to an end, the plucky Springdale native’s name resurfaces.
It seems that there are some who still view the former Arkansas Razorbacks and USC Trojans quarterback as a viable NFL draft pick. Robert Wayerski, in this post for Bleacher Report, suggests that Mustain would be a good fit for the struggling San Francisco 49ers.
Why’s that intriguing? It appeared that Mustain was facing felony charges just last month for allegedly selling prescription drugs online. Yes, Mustain was accused of selling Adderall — …

ESPN says Pelphrey fired

If an ESPN article is right, John Pelphrey has been dismissed as the head basketball coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks and the University of Arkansas will make a formal announcement confirming that later today.
Of course, if the UA does make such an announcement, we’ll post a link to it here at First Arkansas News. If the ESPN story turns out to be wrong, we’ll mention that, too. In other words — stay tuned.
Anyone who has been around Arkansas this year has noticed that fans have grown increasingly irritated with Pelphrey. …

Week in Review — Feb. 28 through March 5

We reported on a slew of things here at First Arkansas News last week.
It would be a downright shame if some people missed some of the stories around here last week. Indeed, we covered everything form UA Basketball Coach John Pelphrey coming under fire to thuggery in downtown Little Rock to a Bella Vista resident winning the Publishers Clearinghouse Sweepstakes.
We want to make things convenient for our readers so — as usual — we’re linking to all of the articles over the past week in the post so that people …

The Week in Review

A heck of a lot of things have happened throughout Arkansas this week.
We’ve covered some of those events here at First Arkansas News, but certainly not all of the events followed by Arkansans this week. In the interest of providing a quick summary of some of the stories we’ve followed this week, we’ve put together a synopsis of  some of the more intriguing stories that have come out this week. And, yes, we’ll do the same thing every weekend.
Before getting into all of that, let me make a quick plug …
