Benton ‘mercy rules’ Parkview, gears up for El Dorado

The Benton Panthers got one step closer to the Class 6A high school football championship game on Friday night by beating Parkview 49-28.
Since Benton was undefeated this season and won the 6A South, the Panthers drew a bye during the first round of the playoffs last week. The team easily handled Parkview tonight, having pulled ahead by 35 points in the third quarter. Benton Panthers make the playoffs

For the second year in a row, the Benton Panthers have made the high school football playoffs.
How did the Panthers get in with a 3-7 record? Because high school football in Arkansas is a bit unique in the way teams are selected for a run at the state title.

Benton fumbles home opener, 50-22

The Benton Panthers — in its Friday home opener — fell 50-22 to Pine Bluff.
The final score exceeded the seven-point Pine Bluff win Hootens.com predicted. The Panthers fell to 1-3 on the season and Pine Bluff improved to 2-2. Prior to the game, Hootens ranked Benton 8th in the 16-team Class 6A while Pine Bluff was ranked 2nd. Top-ranked El Dorado improved its season record to 4-0 with 41-0 victory over Little Rock Fair on Friday.

Big night for the Panthers

Just two weeks ago,the mighty Benton Panthers were getting beaten to pulp in their own stadium by the Texarkana Razorbacks and their head coach, Hatty McBackward (a nickname my dad and I gave him because he wears his cap backward and screams — red-faced — at his team for the entire game).
