Week in Review: June 23-29

First off, a happy Fourth of July holiday to everyone. It’s seems fairly obvious from the drop in site traffic that people are spending time with family and friends rather than slogging around on the Internet. That’s a good thing, ultimately. Speaking of the Fourth of July, make sure to stop by on the holiday as we’ll observe the holiday by posting a special old time radio show or two.
If you missed a few articles over the past few days, you’re in the right place to catch up on everything …

American Made Matters running July 4th promotion

In honor of the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, American Made Matters is running a promotion as part of its ongoing effort to put goods made in the United States in the spotlight.
What is American Made Matters? We wrote about that group back in 2011, but we’re more than happy to provide a brief synopsis about the organization, why it was formed and what its members hope to achieve. That group came into being on July 4, 2009 by Don Rongione, president and chief executive officer of Bollman Hat Co. …

Fourth of July OTR — The Meaning of Freedoms

The Fourth of July is just about over, but this is a very good time to contemplate the significance of the holiday.
To that end, we’re presenting an old time radio episode of Father Knows Best that deals with that very topic. This episode is, perhaps, overly sentimental, but does make a valid point of two and is backed by the gentle humor for which the program was known, so it’s quite an entertaining episode and well worth a listen.
Before listening to the program, consider a thing or two. Any old …

Fourth of July OTR — Great Gildersleeve

Yes, it’s the day before the Fourth of July and we Saline County citizens can’t shoot off our own fireworks this year due to the drought that’s gripped central Arkansas.
That’s a real shame, but we at First Arkansas News have something fun in store — a bunch of Fourth of July-themed old time radio shows. That ought to help with those “no fireworks” blues.
We present to you today, then, an episode of The Great Gildersleeve — one of the finest situation comedies to emerge from the Golden Age of Radio. …

Fourth of July OTR – In a Radio Car

I don’t know how things are in your part of the world, but fireworks have been banned for individuals this year here in scenic Saline County due to the fact it hasn’t rained in a very long time.
That means most of us in the county can’t shoot our own fireworks this year. That’s a real shame, but we at First Arkansas News have something fun in store — a bunch of Fourth of July-themed old time radio shows. That ought to help with those “no fireworks” blues.
We’ll start off with …

Holiday OTR: You Are There — Phildelphia, July 4, 1776

Happy Fourth of July, everyone.
Hopefully, the miserable rainstorms that are fixing to hit central Arkansas aren’t a problem where you live and you’ll be setting off fireworks (or watching a display) later this evening.
Before going out for a night of patriotic fun, however, why not take a few moments and listen to an old time radio episode that does a fairly good job at telling about the birth of the United States? Yes, today’s episode of You Are There plays rather like a newscast centered on the signing of the …

Shoot ’em if you’ve got ’em

Remember when we threw a fit last year about the city of Benton’s fireworks ban on the Fourth of July?
Well, here’s a small reminder that the Benton City Council lifted that ban in May after it had been in place for seven years. Also, vendors can once again sell fireworks inside the Benton city limits. Also, residents are only allowed to set off fireworks between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. on July 3-5.
Ah, but what of a burn ban? The ordinance is rather silent as to that, but it’s not …

Holiday OTR: Meet the Meeks — Planning a Company Picnic

Happy Fourth of July weekend, everyone.
Yes, it’s time to relax and shoot off a firework or two, provided you live in a town that allows such celebrations. Hopefully, you’ll have some time to listen to some old time radio over the weekend.
We’re posting a couple of episodes over the next couple of days that have — believe it or not — a Fourth of July theme. Get all patriotic and get ready to listen to some fine OTR. What could be more downright American than that? Not a whole lot, …

Fruit & yogurt trifle-perfect for guests or the family

Quick, slightly boring copyright notice: This recipe originally appeared on my personal blog and is being reused with my permission (after all, I’m the one posting it). Jamie
Now on to something more yummy!
This is a delectable, light, and less unhealthy dessert that tastes great all year but is especially yummy in the summer. We used to make it a lot for Fourth of July using blueberries and strawberries. I haven’t made it yet this season but when I do, I can update the page with a photo. If …
