Benton to face Parkview on Nov. 21

The Benton Panthers will square off against Parkview on Friday, Nov. 21 in the second round of the Class 6A playoff game.
Benton, which won the 6A South Conference with a 9-0-1 record, won a bye in the first round of the playoffs on Nov. 14. The Panthers’ goal, of course, is to advance to the state championship game to be played at War Memorial Stadium on Dec. 5.
To get to that game, however, the Panthers will have to take care of Parkview at home on Friday and then defeat another …

Week in Review (June 2-8)

It was, as usual, a busy week here at First Arkansas News. We learned about the perils of moving a yard in Arkansas, innovation in the Natural State, discussed Wal-Mart and its “buy American/hire veterans” initiative the fact that bulletin board systems (BBS) are still alive although the Internet made dialing into local services obsolete, etc.
It would be a tragedy if our tens of fans missed a single thing that was posted in the past week. To avoid such unspeakable tragedy, then, we’ve made it easy to catch up on …

Of course it is! This is Arkansas and that means we’re always interested in talking about how the Hogs will turn out in the upcoming season. That’s how things work around First Arkansas News and you’re in luck — it’s barely June and we stand ready to predict within an acceptable margin of error …

Holy crap! Petrino fired!

This isn’t exactly breaking news, but it’s worth mentioning because this is Arkansas and events surrounding the football team are widely followed. Oh, and this report can be considered an editorial, too, because I can’t help it — I’m a University of Arkansas alum and a lifelong Razorbacks fan, so I’m as interested in this horrible turn of events as anyone else in this state.
On Tuesday night, University of Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long fired Bobby Petrino, the man who succeeded Houston Nutt as head football coach in 2007. Petrino …

Benton Panthers make the playoffs

For the second year in a row, the Benton Panthers have made the high school football playoffs.
How did the Panthers get in with a 3-7 record? Because high school football in Arkansas is a bit unique in the way teams are selected for a run at the state title.
In short, there are 16 teams in Class 6A and the conference is further divided into two divisions. In the 6A South — Benton’s division — the top six of the eight teams make the playoffs. Little Rock McClellan and Little Rock …

Benton Panthers leaving C.W. Lewis Stadium; controversy abounds

The vote is in — the Benton Panthers will leave the stadium they’ve called home since 1934.
Yes, this is the last season the Panthers will play in C.W. Lewis Stadium. The Benton School Board, last week, voted 4-3 to build a $10.8 million stadium in the Benton Athletic Complex — a facility that will certainly be dandy and is located closer to the high school.
For the record, I’m not a bit happy about this decision. While I well understand the need for a new stadium, I can’t help but feel …

Arkansas to the Big 12?

There’s been a lot of talk floating around lately about Arkansas leaving the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and heading to the Big 12.
While some Razorbacks fans might be quick to pooh-pooh such a notion, such a move actually makes a certain kind of sense.
Before getting into why Arkansas might possibly be a good it in the Big 12, let’s run through a quick review of why this topic has come to light. On June 10, the University of Colorado accepted an invitation to join the Pac 10 effective in 2012. A …
