Pitchford on KGAS

Donnie Pitchford — the cartoonist responsible for our Lum and Abner comic strips series — was the special guest this week on KGAS 104.3 FM in Carthage, Texas.
Actually, the program was broadcast on both television and radio. We don’t have any video of the broadcast, but we do have the audio.
By the way, if you haven’t yet seen the Lum and Abner comic strip yet, make sure to do that. Bear in mind that we post a new strip every Sunday. Oh, and the comic now runs weekly in the …

Pitchford interviewed on KGAS

Donnie Pitchford — the tireless artist responsible for the great Lum and Abner comic strips published here at First Arkansas News — was interviewed this week on KGAS 104.3-FM and 1590-AM in Carthage, Texas.
Those of you who are regular visitors to First Arkansas News are aware that we launched the Lum and Abner strips at the first of this month and add a new one every Sunday. That effort was made possible by a bunch of kind sponsors who got behind the project and, of course, Chet Lauck Jr.’s decision to …

‘Lum and Abner’ gets the green light

Well, we just got word today — First Arkansas News and Donnie Pitchford have permission to run a weekly Lum and Abner comic strip and negotiate with other publications in hopes they’ll pick it up, too.
Are we excited about this project? You’d better believe it. Pitchford approached First Arkansas News about the project a few months ago and we’ve been working on getting this project off the ground since then. Pitchford, of course, is the president of the National Lum and Abner Society and is a devoted fan of the …

Lum and Abner coming to First Arkansas News — maybe

Anyone who’s a regular visitor to First Arkansas News knows that we’ve dedicated a fair amount of space to old time radio (OTR).
We post a new OTR episode every week in our Weekend OTR series and one of the first major articles we published was one about Lum and Abner — a comedy duo that was prominent on radio stations around the country from 1931 to 1955, made a few movies and was so popular that a whole town changed its name to more closely associate itself with the program …

‘Jot ‘Em Down Journal’ available soon in audio format

Donnie Pitchford, president of the National Lum and Abner Society, announced that his group is converting back issues of the Jot ‘Em Down Journal to an audio format.
What’s the Jot ‘Em Down Journal? It’s a newsletter that was published by the Society from 1984 to 2007 and was all about Lum and Abner. It was, however, in a printed format exclusively until 1992 when Society Vice President Jim Brown started recording them in audio format and sending them to blind fans of the Lum and Abner program.
As amazing as it seems, …

Week in Review — March 28-April 3

Yes, it was another week full of excitement here at First Arkansas News.
We’ve written about everything from the president of the National Lum and Abner Society to a drug-selling mailman in the past few days, so it’s time for a review.
Prior to getting into that, let’s go over a couple of other things. First of all, we should have a big announcement to make on Monday Tuesday that could shake up the way we do things around here (and improve them). Make sure to stop in for that.
Second, we sure …

Weekend OTR — April Fools on Life with Luigi

It’s the weekend once again and that, of course, means it’s time to relax with a classic old time radio program.
We run at least one classic episode a week here at First Arkansas News as part of our Weekend OTR series. Ah, but we dedicate more than just one feature to old time radio — there’s also the OTR Serials section that’s dandy fun (and updated regularly), so make sure to check that out when you get a chance.
This weekend, we’ve got a radio program that celebrates the fun of …

April Fools’ Day wackiness

Indeed, it’s April 1 and everyone knows what that means — it’s time to pester friends, coworkers and loved ones with a bunch of pranks and yell “gotcha!” whenever one hits as planned.
As expected, the Internet was brimming with all manner of April Fools’ gags today and a couple of them caught the attention of us here at First Arkansas News.
One that falls under the categories of  “harmless fun” and “for old time radio fans only” has to do with an announcement posted by the cats over at the National …

Donnie Pitchford guest on ‘The Saturday Night Show’ this weekend

Any old time radio fan needs to write out a reminder to listen to The Saturday Night Show this weekend (April 2) at 9:30 p.m. central on the Internet at YesterdayUSA.com.
Why? What goes on? “Uncle” Donnie Pitchford will be the guest on that show and, yes, he’ll be taking phone calls from listeners. Who is Pitchford? None other than the president of the National Lum & Abner Society. Pitchford is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to old time radio (OTR) and he has a particular fascination with the Lum …

Lum and Abner in a traditional Christmas story

Donnie Pitchford of the National Lum and Abner Society sent over an email advising First Arkansas News that his group is sharing a Christmas present with visitors to his site.
Before getting into that, let me present a little background. One of the earliest (and most popular) stories on this site is all about the history and impact of Lum and Abner — a comedy team from Arkansas that produced an old time radio program that was set in this state in a little town called Pine Ridge. Want to read …
