Martha Shoffner is the least of our problems

Former Arkansas Treasurer Martha Shoffner made the news again last week when she pleaded innocent to federal bribery and extortion charges in U.S. district court. It seems the media will write something about Shoffner whenever she happens to walk near a courthouse, and we at First Arkansas News are as guilty as anyone about that. We, too, have had our fun with the sad, strange story of Shoffner at least a couple of times.

Judge rejects Shoffner’s plea

According to media reports, U.S. District Judge Leon Holmes on Friday tossed out an agreement under which former Arkansas State Treasurer Martha “Pie Fan” Shoffner was to plead guilty to one count of extortion for allegedly accepting at least $36,000 in exchange for sending business to a broker’s company. It has been alleged that two $6,000 payments were sent to Shoffner disguised in pie boxes that even had pies in them (the desserts, perhaps, were bonuses).

Martha Shoffner, pies and federal extortion charges

There are times when reading about Arkansas politics is too much fun. This, folks, is one of those times.
Now, some of us gave up long ago on the state government doing much that would benefit us overly much. At least we can be entertained every now and again by the folks we send to office.
