Christmas dessert — Grandma’s Brown Bread

I was reading this recipe, and it brought back so many memories.
I remember sitting at Grandma’s dining room table and watching her bake. We didn’t talk a lot. Usually I just sat there and watched her. Grandma was the best cook ever. She could even make a can of green peas taste better than my Mom. (Yes there is a story there, and Mom will know what I mean when she reads this post).
There is just something special about being a child and watching or helping your …

Christmas dessert — sugar cookies

So, what can you do when you have a house full of Girl Scout’s over for a Christmas/birthday party?
Simple. Have them make and decorate a batch of sugar cookies.
Yes, we’re all used to Girl Scouts roaming our neighborhoods once a year and selling us cookies, aren’t we? I’m hear to tell you that they are even more enthusiastic about making their own cookies.
My daughter, Brenda SueCarol, celebrated her 10th birthday over the weekend. She had most of the girls from her scout troop over to help her celebrate. We made …

Christmas dessert recipe — Brenda’s chocolate chip cookies

My daughter, Brenda SueCarol, is a sneak.
However, there are times when her natural sneakiness results in something good.
Take this recipe, for example. It came about as a happy accident, or maybe an overzealous little girl who was helping her grandmother and me bake cookies.
We thought one bag of chocolate chips was enough for our cookie recipe. Brenda disagreed and managed to dump another bag in the cookie mix before we realized what was happening. Fortunately for her (and us), her bold addition of more ingredients resulted in a great batch …

Christmas dessert recipe — apple bread

We Americans sure love our apples, don’t we?
We’ve named computers after them, eat more apple pie than you can shake a stick at and what kid doesn’t know the legend of Johnny Appleseed and his love of planting apple trees in the Midwest?
Oh, and here’s some trivia for you. Johnny Appleseed’s real name was John Chapman. In addition to being an accomplished nurseryman, he was a missionary for the Church of New Jerusalem. There you go. You never learned that while singing about Appleseed in kindergarten, did you? Yes, you …

Christmas dessert recipe — pumpkin bread?

I was in the baking mood yesterday so I whipped up some pumpkin bread.
I love pumpkin bread nothing says holidays like the smell of it in the house. You may think I am sharing my pumpkin bread recipe with you today, but you’re wrong.
The only thing that can make pumpkin bread better is cream cheese — a central ingredient in pumpkin bread’s cousin, the pumpkin roll. So, I thought today I would share my Momma’s pumpkin roll recipe.
This is to die for. I hope you all enjoy.
Momma’s …

Christmas dessert recipe — gumdrop cookies

Today I am going with another one of Grandma’s Christmas recipes, and my husband’s favorite this time of year.
Gum Drop Cookies. Goody, goody.
I have seen a lot of recipes for this cookie and have tried them, but none compare to Grandma’s. These are easy to make and great fun when you’ve got a kid or two involved in the cooking process. They’re colorful, as festive as you could ask for, indulgent and absolutely fantastic with a dollop of vanilla frosting spread on top of them. Spice gumdrops or the more …

Christmas recipe — Grandma’s fruit cookies…

Continuing on with the Christmas recipes, we’ve got fruit cookies.
Not fruitcake, mind you — fruit cookies. That’s a completely different breed of cat. Your relatives won’t be regifting these for the next decade. That’s a promise.
Don’t believe me? Give this recipe a try and you’ll love it.
These cookies are my favorite, and there is nothing funnier than watching my oldest sister Jo cut the fruit into smaller pieces (a process which can literally provide hours of entertainment). Fire up that oven and enjoy!
