Women of Northwest Arkansas and beyond are invited for a weekend of rest, rescue and redemption at the third annual Captivating Heart Retreat.

Do Christians really need anything but the four Gospels?

When the ship is sinking, get rid of all the dead weight.
This is written for my Christian friends. My non-Christian friends stopped reading at the word Christian. That’s OK. This isn’t written for them. This is for my Christian friends who, after reading this, will brand me a heretic. But I’m not. I simply ask my Christian friends to read and ponder what I’m saying and ask if it is true. What I write is true, you just won’t like the implications of it, because you’ve never heard this before …

The lifestyle for teaching

Quality leadership is a necessity for every organization and also for an organism like the church. If the church is going to function as God intends it to, we will have to emphasize developing leaders. The book of Titus tells us how to go about that task. A quick reading of Titus shows that character not skills determines the quality of church leadership.
According to Titus 1, the Christian leader is called to be above reproach which does not mean perfect but rather making progress, admitting to failure, and repenting.
Titus 1:7-9 …

Being good, doing good

The Apostle Paul trained and equipped Titus to oversee the churches on the island of Crete. Paul wrote Titus a letter which is part of the New Testament.
That letter is mainly a set of instructions for Titus’ work. There is a consistent theme running through the letter. That theme includes two very closely related ideas: “being good” and “doing good.” Titus was tasked with developing leaders for the churches. Paul wanted to make absolutely sure that Titus understood that integrity and moral goodness are the most important characteristics for a …

Titus’ assignment

The Apostle Paul established some churches on the island of Crete. When Paul moved on to set up new churches elsewhere, he left those churches in the capable hands of Titus.
Paul had trained and equipped Titus for a special job. Titus 1:1-5 states,  “Paul, a bond-servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of those chosen of God and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, 2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago, 3 …

Meeting expectations

Right now, my life is very busy.  Sometimes I think it is too busy.  However it does not compare to the Passion Week. The last week of Jesus’ life was filled to the absolute brim and overflowing with events, activities, as well as public and private teaching.
Sometimes we forget that God was orchestrating all these events to suit His purposes. The way that the donkey colt and the upper room were provided seems to shout out the sovereignty of God.  The fact that Jesus announced in advance Judas’ betrayal, Peter’s …

The congregation search committee

Churches sometimes do not have a very realistic view of themselves. Often this becomes very evident when they begin to search for a pastor. It happens all the time, but it is out in the open during the pastor search process. Surveys are completed by the congregation in which individual members create a long list of qualities a pastor ought to have and things a pastor ought to do.
Because each member has a different set of desires, the list for the prospective pastor becomes very long.  So long, that no …

Southern Baptist Convention opposes BSA ‘homosexual resolution’

According to the Baptist Press, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) on Wednesday adopted a resolution expressing “opposition to and disappointment in the decision of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to change its membership policy” allowing homosexual scouts.
The vote took place on the second — and final — day of the SBC Annual Meeting in Houston. The BSA resolution at issue was adopted on May 23. The resolution states that individuals who are “avowed homosexuals” are still excluded from adult leadership positions, but that youth membership will be extended to …

Week in Review (June 2-8)

It was, as usual, a busy week here at First Arkansas News. We learned about the perils of moving a yard in Arkansas, innovation in the Natural State, discussed Wal-Mart and its “buy American/hire veterans” initiative the fact that bulletin board systems (BBS) are still alive although the Internet made dialing into local services obsolete, etc.
It would be a tragedy if our tens of fans missed a single thing that was posted in the past week. To avoid such unspeakable tragedy, then, we’ve made it easy to catch up on …

The work of the Search Committee

Every human is created to be in fellowship with the Creator. As I have written elsewhere, God has promised that we can find Him. He has said that we will find Him when we search for Him with all of our heart. God said that we will find Him when we set our heart and soul to do so. Commitment and effort are required.  If we really want to find God, we will.
God gave us a few suggestions in the Bible.  First, Isaiah 51:1 says, “Listen to me, you who …
