National Lum and Abner Society has back issues of ‘Jot ‘Em Down Journal’ available

One of the first articles to appear here on First Arkansas News was one about Lum and Abner — a couple of old time radio comedians created by two Arkansas boys.
That post got quite a bit of attention, due in no small part to the assistance of Donald “Donnie” Pitchford, president of the National Lum and Abner Society. It’s hard to beat Pitchford’s knowledge of Lum and Abner, and the same can be said of a lot of members of the Lum and Abner Society.

‘Lum and Abner’ show – alive and well in 2010

There’s not been a live broadcast of the Lum and Abner radio show since 1954, but the show still has fans today. From 1931 through 1955, the Lum and Abner show gave rise to seven movies, hours of classic radio and was even responsible for changing the name of the west Arkansas town on which the series was based.

Old time radio, anyone?

Years ago, my dad got me hooked on old time radio shows. My dad’s favorite series was Lum and Abner — two characters created and portrayed by Chester Lauck and Norris Goff. Lum and Abner came on every afternoon after school in (at least!) the 1970s and 1980s from a radio station in Hot Springs.
I believe that station was KTHS, which would make sense as that’s where Goff and Lauck started off with their “bumpkin” act before getting picked up by NBC. Lum and Abner made some movies and stayed …
