Week in Review: June 23-29

First off, a happy Fourth of July holiday to everyone. It’s seems fairly obvious from the drop in site traffic that people are spending time with family and friends rather than slogging around on the Internet. That’s a good thing, ultimately. Speaking of the Fourth of July, make sure to stop by on the holiday as we’ll observe the holiday by posting a special old time radio show or two.
If you missed a few articles over the past few days, you’re in the right place to catch up on everything …

Week in Review (June 2-8)

It was, as usual, a busy week here at First Arkansas News. We learned about the perils of moving a yard in Arkansas, innovation in the Natural State, discussed Wal-Mart and its “buy American/hire veterans” initiative the fact that bulletin board systems (BBS) are still alive although the Internet made dialing into local services obsolete, etc.
It would be a tragedy if our tens of fans missed a single thing that was posted in the past week. To avoid such unspeakable tragedy, then, we’ve made it easy to catch up on …

Why Wal-Mart’s ‘buy American’ initiative could be significant

KATV-7 — the ABC affiliate in Little Rock — reported today that Bentonville-based Walmart Stores Inc. has pledged to buy $50 billion in goods made or grown in America over the next 10. Wal-Mart also plans to train and provide jobs to 100,000 recently-discharged veterans over the next five years.
Here’s the odd thing — Reuters reported Walmart made those announcements back in January. So, the question must be asked — is KATV just six months behind in its news coverage?
Absolutely not. In fact, one could argue that there can’t be …

Motorola to make smartphone in the U.S.

Motorola announced on Thursday that it will release a new smartphone — the Moto X — in October.
Motorola officials have gone on at length about how advanced the Android-based phone will be. For example, Motorola claims the phone will be contextually aware of its surroundings and act accordingly — it can fire up a camera when pulled out of a pocket, behave differently when in a moving car, etc. It’s to be a high-end smartphone competing with the likes of the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S4. However, …

Buying American this Christmas

TAP America, a non-profit organization, has declared December 2011 as “Buy American Month.”
TAP – an acronym for Tolerance, Americanism, Patriotism – said in a news release that the United States economy is suffering at the hands of the Chinese government due to their aggressive policies. TAP, then, asks American citizens to buy American products, give service-oriented gifts and boycott products made in China in hopes of sending a message to corporations and manufacturers that people value American workers, jobs and innovation.
Two Arkansas companies – Hot Springs-based Munro American Shoes and …

GE tells American workers to go to hell, ‘First Arkansas News’ announces new series

You want to talk about timing? Just yesterday, we at First Arkansas News posted an article about the growing interest in buying American-made products and — before the pixels were even cold on that one — General Electric announced it’s moving a bunch of jobs to China.
That ironic announcement — we’ll get to it in a minute — has prompted an expansion of the aforementioned article into a series of them. We’ve already heard from Roger Simmermaker of How Americans Can Buy American and we’ll hear from Don Rongione of …

Buying American?

Fire up that Google search engine and key in the phrase “buy American” when you get a chance.
You’ll be greeted with page after page containing listings of sites that express alarm over the loss of American manufacturing jobs, steer viewers to companies that make products in the U.S., suggest ways to correct trade deficits, etc. One of the sites that will rank highly if you run that search bears a very direct and self-explanatory title — How Americans Can Buy American. The owner of that site, Roger Simmermaker of Orlando, …

Week in Review (March 21-27)

It’s been a heck of a week on a number of levels here in Arkansas.
For one thing, that pesky winter returned in full force about the middle of the week. Indeed, our 70-degree, sunny days were replaced by near-freezing temperatures and nasty rain by the weekend.
For another, the question a heck of a lot of us Arkansans wanted to know was answered this week — who will replace deposed Razorbacks Basketball Coach John Pelphrey? Also, we had the state Legislature going about its business of annoying us with new laws. …
