Why Wal-Mart’s ‘buy American’ initiative could be significant

KATV-7 — the ABC affiliate in Little Rock — reported today that Bentonville-based Walmart Stores Inc. has pledged to buy $50 billion in goods made or grown in America over the next 10. Wal-Mart also plans to train and provide jobs to 100,000 recently-discharged veterans over the next five years.
Here’s the odd thing — Reuters reported Walmart made those announcements back in January. So, the question must be asked — is KATV just six months behind in its news coverage?

Mortgage delinquency rates to drop next year?

TransUnion – the third largest credit bureau in the United States – predicts that mortgage delinquency rates will fall in 2012.
The delinquency rate is defined as the number of borrowers that are 60 days or more behind on their mortgages. TransUnion predicts that rate will hit 6 percent in the first quarter of 2012 and then drop to around 5 percent by the end of the year. According to TransUnion, the delinquency rate peaked in the fourth quarter of 2009 at 6.89 percent.

‘The Compass Report’ — positives emerge in Fort Smith area economy

First quarter 2011 economic conditions were mostly unchanged compared to the 2010 period, but sales tax gains and improving employment figures indicate improving momentum.

Spring Into Business Expo coming April 16 to Rogers

ROGERS—The 2nd Annual Spring Into Business Expo features many new vendors and a new location, but will have the same focus on helping the public learn about products and services from local businesses.
This year’s Spring Into Business Expo is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 16 at the Frisco Station Mall in Rogers. The event has its own Facebook page, which is where information about new vendors is being added.

Reporter’s notebook: Saying goodbye to Jack

It’s rare for a news writer to place themselves in a story, especially a death notice. Being that personal is not typical, but today presents non-typical circumstances.
I’m mourning the death of a man I, and much of the world, called friend. Jack Shewmaker died Wednesday night at his Benton County home. Funeral services will be noon on this Monday, Nov. 22, at Fellowship Bible Church in Rogers.
