The Razorbacks will finish 7-5 this fall. Count on it.

Major League Baseball is well underway, the National Basketball League is winding down and summer is just around the corner. So, naturally, it’s time for all true Arkansans to think about Razorbacks football in the fall, right?
Of course it is! This is Arkansas and that means we’re always interested in talking about how the Hogs will turn out in the upcoming season. That’s how things work around First Arkansas News and you’re in luck — it’s barely June and we stand ready to predict within an acceptable margin of error …

After a few weeks of high drama,  John L. Smith has been named interim head football coach at the University of Arkansas — thus replacing the departing Bobby Petrino.
Yes, the photo to the left identifies Smith as the new head coach for Weber State. We’ll get to that in a minute.
For those who aren’t familiar with Arkansas or have been living under a rock since the first of the month, here’s a recap of what led to this hire. Petrino — head coach of the Razorbacks since he replaced Houston …

Garrick McGee headed to UAB

Our loss is their gain — Arkansas Offensive Coordinator Garrick McGee has been named head coach of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
McGee has been the offensive coordinator at the University of Arkansas for the past two seasons. It’s worth mentioning that the Razorbacks went 10-2 in the regular season both this year and last and that the Hogs led the SEC in passing offense this year. It should also be noted that Arkansas Head Coach Bobby Petrino has issued a statement congratulating McGee on his new job at …

Nutt sacked

After a couple of wobbly seasons, Ole Miss officials announced today that this year will be the last one with Houston Nutt as head football coach.
“Our goal is to compete for championships, and we are not making progress in that regard,” said University of Mississippi Athletic Director Boone at a press conference on Monday afternon. “It’s time for our team to have new leadership and a new direction.”
Nutt coached at the University of Arkansas for 10 seasons and was hired by Ole Miss in 2008. In 2008 and 2009, Ole …

It’s official — Knile Davis possibly out for season

Well, Razorbacks fans, here’s the news none of us wanted to hear — star Arkansas running back Knile Davis is probably out for the season.
Davis sustained an injury to his left ankle in practice on Friday, Arkansas Head Coach Bobby Petrino said in a Friday news release on HogWired.com.
“I am extremely disappointed for Knile,” Petrino said in the news release. “He is a captain who was incredibly focused on the upcoming year. His leadership throughout the offseason was significant in the development of this team. Our athletic trainers and medical …

Knile Davis injured in practice

Ouch!
Both Arkansas and national media outlets are buzzing with news that Knile Davis — standout running back for the Arkansas Razorbacks — went down with an apparent leg injury on Thursday. The question, of course, is how severe the injury is and whether the junior star player will be out for the season. Yes, there’s speculation all over the place regarding the severity of the injury (the forums over at HogVille.net, for example, are simply brimming with concern, rumors and the like), but ESPN reports that there is no official …

Garrick McGee withdraws from Tulsa search

It’s been a busy week for Arkansas Razorbacks Offensive Coordinator Garrick McGee.
The word got out earlier this week that McGee was talking to both Connecticut and Tulsa about taking head coaching jobs at those colleges. on Friday Connecticut introduced Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni as its head coach and McGee issued a statement saying he has withdrawn from the Tulsa search.
“My goal is to one day be a head coach and there are a number of considerations that factor into when that time will come,” McGee said in the …

Big weekend in the SEC

Although there was no football to follow this weekend, there was still plenty going on around the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
First and foremost, Arkansas Razorbacks Head Coach Bobby Petrino agreed to a new contract. The seven-year agreement raises his salary from $2.7 million per year to $3.56 million and includes an $18 million buyout clause that comes into play should Petrino get fired or leave the University of Arkansas. The amount of the buyout clause shrinks throughout the contract until the amount is $3.9 million in 2017.
Additionally, the non-compete clause is …

It’s official — Arkansas heading to the Sugar Bowl

People have speculated about it for over a week, but now it’s official — the Arkansas Razorbacks will face the Ohio Buckeyes in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Jan. 4.
That’s a great thing for the Razorbacks. The program was a complete mess when Houston Nutt fled town and wound up in Ole Miss back in 2007. The Hogs found an upgrade in Head Coach Bobby Petrino, who has the team in its first bowl championship series bowl since the BCS was formed in 1998.
Yes, Petrino took a team …

Arkansas to the Sugar Bowl?

If there’s an Arkansas fan anywhere who hasn’t heard that the #12 Razorbacks just knocked off the #5 LSU Tigers 31-23, I’d be shocked.
At the risk of sounding redundant, we at First Arkansas News want to repeat it again. Some polls have LSU ranked #6 while some put the Tigers at #5. Regardless, Arkansas pulled off a very solid win tonight, finished out the regular season at 10-2 (6-2 in the SEC) and may be ranked in the top 10 (we’ll have to wait and see on that).
We’ll also have …
