MLK Day observed in Benton

As anyone with a calendar and/or a television set knows, Jan. 20 was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day throughout the nation. Former U.S. Pres. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law as a way to commemorate the civil rights leader, but the holiday wasn’t officially observed by all 50 states in the nation until 2000. It is, then a fairly new holiday in the U.S.

Benton Matters schedules Edison Avenue cleanup for June 8

Benton Matters, which is part of the Benton Area Chamber of Commerce’s Go Benton initiative, will clean up trash and yard debris on Edison Avenue on June 8 from 8-11 a.m.
Benton Matters was formed this year for the purpose of identifying parts of town that need to be cleaned up and organize volunteers to spend a few hours picking up trash and making other improvements to those areas. Benton Matters cleans up South Street

On April 21 (Saturday), over 100 volunteers answered a call for help from Benton Matters to help spruce up South Street in Benton.
Benton Matters, a part of the city’s larger Go Benton initiative, was formed in January. Gary James, executive director of the Benton Area Chamber of Commerce, said he got the idea to form Benton Matters when thinking of ways to clean up highly visible areas in town so as to make the city more attractive to potential businesses and residents.
