Cliff Lee — Benton boy bouncing all around the MLB

Any fan of Major League Baseball has heard the news by now — pitcher Cliff Lee has left the Texas Rangers to play once again for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Here in Benton, we do tend to keep up with Lee. He’s a Benton boy who’s made good. In fact, there’s a sign at the Benton Panthers’ baseball field that declares the place is “home of Cliff Lee.” Proud of him? You’d better believe it.

Benton Panthers make the playoffs

It’s been a rough year for the Benton Panthers, but the team clinched an appearance in the Arkansas Class 6A playoffs last night with a 61-13 drubbing of Little Rock’s J.A. Fair.
That victory gave the Panthers a 3-7 record on the season and only its second home win at C.W. Lewis Stadium in Benton this season. Truth be told, that was the second home win for the Panthers in the past two years.

Big night for the Panthers

Just two weeks ago,the mighty Benton Panthers were getting beaten to pulp in their own stadium by the Texarkana Razorbacks and their head coach, Hatty McBackward (a nickname my dad and I gave him because he wears his cap backward and screams — red-faced — at his team for the entire game).
After that Texarkana game, the Panthers were 0-5. Things have improved considerably since then. They went to Sheridan and chalked up a victory against that team last week and, just Friday, they hosted McClellan at C.W. Lewis stadium and …

‘Band Night’ in Benton

Yes, it’s October and you know what that means — it’s time for the bands in Benton middle school, junior high and high school to take the field at C.W. Lewis and wow parents with their skills.
Every year, the aforementioned schools in Benton participate in Band Night. That was held tonight and a good time was had by all (well, the weather was ridiculous — 80 degrees at 7 p.m in October is a bit on the extreme side).
