Exchange of higher ed power

LITTLE ROCK–Two announcements came out of Little Rock today that will influence Arkansas’ higher education system.
Jim Purcell, director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, was appointed the commissioner of Louisiana’s higher education system. Purcell started his position at the ADHE in 2008.
The second announcement was that Gov. Mike Beebe named ADHE Deputy Director Shane Broadway as interim director of the agency, which governs the state’s 11 universities and 22 community colleges.
Beebe will discuss how next to proceed with the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board, according to a press release …

Victory Walk Inc. provides clients hope, improved quality of life

SPRINGDALE—Brian Wood of Beebe has had two near-death experiences in his life, a fact that has taught him to never take anything for granted.
The most recent was August 24 when his house burned to the ground, nearly with him inside. Passersby saw the house burning and got him out in time, he said. Wood was unable to get himself out of the house because of the first near-death experience—a car accident that happened Oct. 28, 2006 that left him a quadriplegic.

Bargains Galore on 64 starts Thursday

The annual Bargains Galore on 64 is set for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, (Aug. 12-14) running 160 miles from Beebe to Fort Smith.
The 11th year for the event, organizers say that shoppers come from around the country to seek out bargains. This year, they are predicting larger crowds and more vendors.
While this shopper likes the sales spaced out all along the roadside on Highway 64, I have also found some extreme bargains at garage sales located just off the main drag during the event. My best advice is to hit …
