Week in Review: June 23-29

First off, a happy Fourth of July holiday to everyone. It’s seems fairly obvious from the drop in site traffic that people are spending time with family and friends rather than slogging around on the Internet. That’s a good thing, ultimately. Speaking of the Fourth of July, make sure to stop by on the holiday as we’ll observe the holiday by posting a special old time radio show or two.
If you missed a few articles over the past few days, you’re in the right place to catch up on everything …

Barnes & Noble waving white flag in tablet war

It’s a sad day for fans of Nook tablets — Barnes & Noble has announced it will cease manufacturing color tablets because the company is losing a lot of money on them.
It’s no secret that Barnes & Noble has been getting its teeth kicked in by the Amazon Kindle Fire since the Nook Tablet was released in 2011. How badly has Barnes & Noble fared in the tablet market? The company posted a loss of $222 million for fiscal 2013 as its current lineup of tablets — the Nook HD …

Apple iOS 7 — works better, looks horrible

Be careful what you wish for, for you may get it.
Yes, that’s an old proverb that has been attributed to St. Teresa of Avila and, well, a lot of other people. We’ll stick with the St. Teresa attribution because she’s fascinating.
Who coined that phrase doesn’t really matter so much as the fact that it may prove very true in the case of Apple iOS 7. Apple users (myself included) have howled about how boring Apple’s mobile operating system has become and have demanded change. I’ve got iOS 7 Beta 2 …

Switching from iPhone? Here’s a tip.

After a couple of years of owning an Apple iPhone 4, my wife decided it was time to pick up an Android. Specifically, she bought a Samsung Galaxy S4.
It’s an awesome phone, but there was one problem with it — she couldn’t receive any texts. A brief trip through the Apple Support Community revealed that a lot of people have had that problem when moving from the iPhone to something else.
After combing through the aforementioned Apple support forum and doing a few searches on Google, we wound up with a …

Motorola to make smartphone in the U.S.

Motorola announced on Thursday that it will release a new smartphone — the Moto X — in October.
Motorola officials have gone on at length about how advanced the Android-based phone will be. For example, Motorola claims the phone will be contextually aware of its surroundings and act accordingly — it can fire up a camera when pulled out of a pocket, behave differently when in a moving car, etc. It’s to be a high-end smartphone competing with the likes of the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S4. However, …

The Pogoplug – decent media server for less than $25

A couple of years ago, I got an idea –wouldn’t it be dandy to convert my DVD collection to digital files, stick them on a couple of big hard drives and then stream them to my Xbox 360 in the living room and LG Smart TV Adapter in the bedroom? Wouldn’t it be great to be able to stream content to my iPhone and Android tablet, too, and how great would it be to be able to access files on the Internet from any Internet browser?
I was able to achieve …

Google Play and slashed prices for Nook

The good folks over at Barnes & Noble are up to a lot these days so far as the Nook HD and HD+ are concerned. Yes, Google Play is now included on those Nooks and prices on the tablets have been slashed for Mother’s Day.
The 7″ HD and 9″ HD+ tablets are capable, to be sure, but there’s been a problem with them — users have been chained to the awful Barnes & Noble apps store. First Arkansas News, last month, posted an easy way for people to “root” their …

Go ahead and Jump!

There are, to be sure, a lot of applications out there that will let you log into a computer remotely and control it like you are sitting in front of it.
I’ll not get into which ones are great and which ones are not because, frankly, I don’t care. I’m only interested in getting something that works and the Jump Desktop works very well. It is available for Microsoft Windows (but, really, what isn’t?) Apple Mac OS and the most popular mobile operating systems on the planet — Apple iOS and …
