Women of Northwest Arkansas and beyond are invited for a weekend of rest, rescue and redemption at the third annual Captivating Heart Retreat.
Captivating Heart is Oct. 17-19 at New Life Ranch in Colcord, Okla. (about 10 minutes west of Siloam Springs, Ark.). Sponsored by Strings Attached Ministries, the retreat is inspired by the book Captivating by John and Stasi Eldredge.
The retreat is designed for women (age 16+) of all backgrounds and faiths although the Christian Bible will be used as a reference point. Cari Kaufman of Strings Attached Ministries and …
The Goodwill store in Searcy was destroyed by a fire and a temporary one was set up within a week. No one was hurt in the fire and that is fortunate. What is not fortunate is that the store must be rebuilt and nonprofit, charitable organizations such as Goodwill aren’t exactly known for maintaining large building funds.
Chili’s restaurants throughout Arkansas are stepping in to help by donating 10 percent of their proceeds on Wednesday, June 25, to Goodwill in support of the Searcy rebuilding effort. All Chili’s restaurants in the …
First Baptist Church of Benton (FBC) is trying something new this year — moving vacation Bible school from the church to the Boys & Girls Club in Benton in an attempt to include more children in the community in the Sunday-Thursday event.
Pastor Rick Grant, in a sermon a couple of months ago, said Zapped is a new endeavor for First Baptist Church. He said vacation Bible school is traditionally held on the FBC campus, but church officials wanted to reach out to more children in the community who would like …
Mark those calendars, Elvis fans — Elvis Week 2013 is set for Aug. 10-17 at Graceland in Memphis (of course). Elvis Presley, of course, died on Aug. 16, 1977 at 42-years-old. The King has been gone for almost 36 years, but his legend continues.
What’s going on at Elvis week? Quite a few things, actually. Naturally there will be Elvis impersonators all over the place and Ronnie Millsap will be on hand for the event. There will be appearances from a lot of “Elvis insiders,” including Elvis’ drummer D.J. Fontana and …
It has been said that what appears in a newspaper is often determined by what the managing editor sees when he’s driving to work in the morning. While that may or may not be true, here’s something that is verifiable — here at First Arkansas News, what is sometimes covered depends on what terms pop up in our search analytics (for the record, the most popular search term over the past few weeks has related to the anticipated and snazzy retro gaming console, the Hyperkin RetroN 5 — go figure).
Get ready classic video game fans — the 10th Oklahoma Video Game Exhibition (OVGE) is set for Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the SpiritBank Event Center at 10441 South Regal Blvd. in Tulsa.
“Before the OVGE, people from the surrounding states had to travel across the country for events such as this,” Jesse Hardesty, founder and organizer of the OVGE, said in a news release. “And since the OVGE first began back in September of 2003, we have inspired many other retro conventions in the surrounding areas.”
If you’re in western Arkansas (or live close to it) and are looking for something to do this weekend, bear in mind that the 36th annual Lum & Abner Festival is scheduled in Mena on Friday and Saturday.
Who were Lum and Abner? A couple of hillbilly-type characters created by Norris “Tuffy” Goff and Chester Lauck which became the most popular old time radio comedy team Arkansas ever produced. The team started out in the Mena area, made it big during the Golden Age of Radio, had an Arkansas community renamed …
Benton Matters, which is part of the Benton Area Chamber of Commerce’s Go Benton initiative, will clean up trash and yard debris on Edison Avenue on June 8 from 8-11 a.m.
Benton Matters was formed this year for the purpose of identifying parts of town that need to be cleaned up and organize volunteers to spend a few hours picking up trash and making other improvements to those areas. The last cleanup project was on South Street and you can click here to read more about that effort.
Interested in helping on …
As our tens of fans have no doubt noticed, First Arkansas News has gone through a few changes lately. The most noticeable development is that we’re actually updating the site again.
Yes, from July 24 last year through March 12 this year, there were no new posts at First Arkansas News. What happened? Site founder/owner/editor/etc. Ethan C. Nobles (that would be me) got sick around November 2011 and wound up shifting priories — as I do a lot of freelance writing, I concentrated on what actually paid well. Believe it or …
New Beginnings Pregnancy Resource Center at 120 S. Conrad St. in Benton hosted an open house on Monday to give people a chance to tour the organization’s facility and discuss what services the nonprofit offers in the community.
New Beginnings offer services to parents in need of counseling, baby clothes, diapers, formula and other items that are costly but necessary for raising children. Kim Puska of New Beginnings said the facility provides services to 60 to 75 expecting mothers and women with infants every week. She said some single mothers are …
