Shares of Tesla (TSLA) rose 6% Tuesday after KeyBanc analyst Brad Erickson said in a report that he expects Tesla to deliver 30,000 Model 3 cars in the second quarter, and almost 120,000 for the full year.
When Tesla released the original version of Autopilot, some owners appeared to operate their vehicles as if they were fully autonomous.
Tesla's vehicles have been involved in several crashes this year and at least two people have died in those crashes.
He added that "to date, Autopilot resources have rightly focused entirely on safety (and) with V9 (version 9), we will begin to enable full self-driving features". Most cars lack the lidar sensors and 360-degree cameras that can be used to detect lanes, obstacles, and traffic-sensors that are ubiquitous in autonomous test vehicles.
A Model S recall, fears about Tesla running out of cash and high profile crashes involving Tesla vehicles that were in Autopilot mode also hurt the company.
Missy Cummings, the director of Duke University's Humans and Autonomy Lab, said Musk's self-driving statement was an "attempt to generate hype" and that his assertion of a focus on safety was "laughable".More news: Warriors GM says team will give Kevin Durant whatever deal he wants

Musk said that the autopilot issue during lane-merging is better in the current software and would be fully fixed in the August update.
Spent air from the thrusters would be refilled immediately using the Roadster's batteries to power air pumps, which in lesser electric vehicles may be a reduced range concern.
"Inevitably, somebody's not going to service their auto properly and they're going to drop a hubcap and it's going to guillotine somebody", Musk recently said at an event discussing his Boring Company's plans to build car-carrying tunnels under Los Angeles and other cities.
Tesla's Autopilot driver assistance system has had its share of controversy, but the latest Autopilot controversy stems from a third-party accessory.
