Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death nationally and one of just three leading causes that's going up.
Two celebrities have died of suicide this week. Pennsylvania Mental Health Consumers' Association executive director Lynn Keltz says, mental health should be treated the same way as physical health.
In addition to mental health conditions and suicide attempts as risk factors, other contributing circumstances include social and economic problems, access to the means to commit suicide, and poor coping and problem-solving skills, the health agency said in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
"Suicide is 'multi-determined.' There's never just one reason", Julie Geddef of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services said. Each one of us can learn the words to say when we're anxious about someone, and we can learn how to be there to keep others safe. "It points to the need for a comprehensive approach to prevention".

"Those are the times to really support each other", Schuchat said. The radio announcer, she said, encouraged listeners to look for warning signs in friends, neighbors, co-workers.
The study also broke down the data by state and found suicide rates varied widely. People ages 10-24 had the lowest rate.
Maryland was among the 49 states that saw an increase in suicide rates from 1999 to 2016, according to a report released this week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but the state's rates did not rise as sharply as the national average.
A lot of those states with the highest suicide rates happen to be in the Midwest where there are lower populations and more rural areas.
High-profile suicides lead to more phone calls to suicide prevention centers and not always right away. "When there is a listing in the obituaries, that is something that is often not included (as the cause of death), although more families seem to be including it as a way to educate people about the prevalence of the problem".
