All veteran, family and friends are invited to attend.
"Gathering to Honor Hometown Heroes", 2-3 p.m.; Historical Society will lead visitors to graves of more than two dozen veterans, from as far back as the Revolutionary War, at Howes Family Ancient Cemetery, 48 Bramble Lane. Since the days of the Civil War, humble Americans have gathered together on Memorial Day to remember and pay tribute to all who have fought and selflessly surrendered the precious gift of life, so that other could live free. "The Memorial Day program will consist of the invocation, presentation of the national colors, singing of the national anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance, the introduction of Gold Star Mothers, and a reading of the Gettysburg Address".
The chimes will remain in place at the cemetery through the fall. "Freedom is something that we must fight for daily, and it always costs lives".
Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, originated in the 19th Century following the Civil War.
The event is scheduled to include a guest speaker and wreath-laying ceremony.
According to Wikipedia, Memorial Day was held on May 30 from 1868 until 1970. Military ID or proof of service is required for free admission. SSG Hurley is now serving with the Iowa National Guard and works as a Human Resources NCO for the 67th Troop Command.
Serving as grand marshal is William Thumm, who served with the Army's 9th Transport Company Airborne unit during the Vietnam War. That ceremony will also be open to the general public. Hurley served as Human Resources NCO 67th Troop Command.
The VFW Auxiliary will provide breakfast at the VFW Hall for everyone participating in putting out the flags. All-you-can-eat pancakes will be served with choice of ham or sausage, fruit and beverage for a free will donation. The public is encouraged to help with this project.
Stillwater area: 15-minute ceremony with a rifle salute and the playing of Taps by the honor guard and auxiliary from Greeder-Hinds-Comfort Post 323 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Stillwater, at 7 a.m.at Rutherford Cemetery; 7:30 a.m.at St. Matthews Cemetery in Grant; 7:50 a.m.at Withrow Cemetery; 8:30 a.m.at Houlton, Wis., Cemetery; 9 a.m.at Fairview Cemetery; 9:20 a.m.at Salem Cemetery; and 9:45 a.m.at the post, 5880 N. Omaha Ave. The Police Department Honor Guard will fire a ceremonial volley and a memorial wreath will be placed at the cemetery event, and the guest speaker at the 11 a.m. event will be retired Air Force Lt. Col. Charles "Chip" Carroll.
The Veterans Tribute Tower Committee will host the traditional Memorial Day Ceremony on the Cemetery Green surrounding the Veterans Tribute Tower and flagpole. The event will be held at the Veterans Memorial at 1274 Evergreen Road in Wrightwood. Organ music by Sara Drinane 11 a.m.to 1 p.m. Saturday, Monday; 11:30 a.m.to 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Memorial Day 2018 parades and ceremonies in central PA
The final ceremony will be at the Memorial Gardens Monday at 1 p.m.
Monday - American Legion Bixby-Hansen Post No. 171 of Union Grove.
The program this year will be the Missing Man Table presented by Legion members.
All are welcome to stay following the service for coffee, juice and donuts.
The day includes morning memorial services at local cemeteries including Forest Hill and Holy Cross, a service at the GAR monument, the Michael Geary Bridge and at the VFW Post Home. This program also takes place at 10:00 a.m.
A solemn memorial service will be held in the cemetery beginning at 11 a.m. A noon lunch will be served by the Post 494 Ladies Auxiliary.
In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday which is to be celebrated on the last Monday in May.
In the event of inclement weather, the service will take place at the American Legion in Newton.
Following the service, the annual Chicken Noodle Dinner will be served at the Legion Hall.
Monday's events will begin with a huge Memorial Day parade through the Village beginning at 10 a.m. Major Gossett is stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
