The Nobel Prize in literature will not be awarded this year following sex-abuse allegations and other issues that have affected the public image of the Swedish Academy that selects the victor.
The academy says it will now announce the 2018 victor along with the 2019 victor next year.
The Nobel Foundation reacted promptly, saying it presumes that the academy "will now put all its efforts into the task of restoring its credibility as a prize-awarding institution and that the Academy will report the concrete actions that are undertaken".
The Swedish Academy that selects the Nobel Literature Prize laureate has been plunged into crisis since November, in the wake of the global #MeToo campaign against sexual harassment.
Olsson said on Swedish Radio that the academy had been in "full agreement" to postpone the 2018 award since "there really was no other alternative".
Not only has the infighting since the allegations have gone public exposed the patriarchy embedded in the system in its reaction to the stance taken by now-resigned Permanent Secretary Sara Darius and several other members against Frostenson and Claude-Arnault, it has also highlighted the pitfalls of a lack of transparency in the functioning of such a hallowed body. His lawyer, Bjorn Hurtig, denied all allegations, claiming his client was the victim of "a witch hunt". Some members also quit over Frostenson staying on board, per the Times.More news: China's first locally made aircraft carrier starts trials at sea

The Academy said it will now announce the 2018 victor along with the 2019 victor. Its inception followed the death of Alfred Nobel in 1896.
Seen as bearers of high culture, the academy is traditionally known for its integrity and discretion, with its meetings and decisions shrouded in secrecy.
This is not the first time this has happened. Last year, a Swedish newspaper reported that Arnault had harassed or assaulted 18 women, and since then, more accusations have come out, including that he groped Sweden's Crown Princess, Victoria.
The delay for the 2018 prize in literature will not affect other awards, the Nobel Foundation statement said.
BOGAARDS: So there would not be a determine made on the part of publishers to hold back a book because the Nobel Prize is not going to be awarded in 2018.
He is also accused of leaking prize-winners' names ahead of their official announcement, a major cultural event which is covered each year by the world's media. In its statement Friday, the academy indicated reforms to "modernize the interpretation of the Academy's statutes, principally the question of resignation of membership". The prize was postponed on seven previous occasions, six of which occurred during World War I and II. The most recent postponement was the award to American novelist William Faulkner, who received his 1949 prize a year late, in 1950. American playwright Eugene O'Neill was awarded the 1936 prize a year later, in 1937, at the same time as that year's victor received his prize.
