It also came a week after the acting governor of Benue state, Mr. Benson Abounu, had warned of impending attacks on five communities.

In a State House statement by his spokesperson, Femi Adeshina, President Buhari described the killing as "vile and satanic".
Riots also broke out in Makurdi, the capital of Benue, following the church attack.
"If we are to give in to the President's assertions lately that these killer herdsmen are foreigners and that a dead Gadhafi could leave behind such deadly force that a living President and its army have no answer to, where then lies our pride as a nation", he asked. He said that the attackers are believed to be Fulani herdsmen. They still go grazing around. "These people are killing our women and children and the federal government is watch while our people are being killed and butchered as if we do not have a government in Nigeria". Many villagers fled into the bush as the militia men fired indiscriminately, burning down around 73 homes and destroying food stores. Especially often similar incidents happen in the state of Benue.
It said the action was not only despicable but unheard of in the history of the country.
