The feature, which was leaked last week, allows users to select and play specific songs while on mobile; instead of being locked into the shuffle play option.
Paid users don't have to listen to advertisements between songs, have unlimited on demand playlists and can "listen offline", meaning they can play songs without a WiFi connection or mobile data. However, the songs have to be within one of Spotify's 15 personalized discovery playlists, which includes Today's Top Hits, Discovery Weekly, and Release Radar. But in even bigger news, Free on Spotify will now let you create your own playlists. The free app is still ad-supported.
Given that Spotify recently launched an IPO, these changes seem to be an effort to attract more users to the service that the platform hopes will eventually convert into paying customers at some point.
This is great news for mobile Spotify users, but investors aren't pleased.
The move is Spotify's latest to fend off increasing competition from rival Apple Music, which announced earlier this month that it had reached 40 million paying subscribers. Spotify calls the new feature as "assisted playlisting".

And in Spotify's words, in accordance with their company mission: "Having more fans discovering more music brings us closer to our goal of reinventing the streaming music landscape, making it a truly rewarding experience for fans and artists alike".
In total, the new free tier will include on-demand access to 15 playlists in total (with more playlists available with limitations like shuffle).

The interface is also changing for new users, with an account setup process where Spotify gets to know you, as you tap on the artists you like, represented in bubbles.
