There is then a big drop off in health outcomes with Hancock County ranked #71 and Cerro Gordo the 72nd healthiest county in Iowa. Ozaukee County topped the list at No. 1 for both its health outcomes and factors. But the county's rank of 83 percent of ninth-graders who graduate within four years is far below the rate of 95 percent for top-performing counties.
Putnam County ranked fifth for health outcomes and fourth for health factors this year. "It will take collaborative efforts across multiple sectors - health, housing, community development, finance, social services, and education - to develop strategies for achieving health equity".
"We definitely look at this and see what areas we need to try harder on improvements", she said. Just like we get yearly check-ups, an annual report released Monday morning provided a "health snapshot" of almost every county in the U.S. Communities use the rankings to garner support for health initiatives among government agencies, health care providers, community organizations, business leaders, policymakers and the public. The Rankings examine dozens of factors that influence health including (but not limited to) rates of premature death, smoking, obesity levels, childhood poverty, access to healthy foods, levels of physical activities and rates of high school graduation and college attendance.
While population size is important for overall health, demographics and social economic status play a much greater role, according to the health officials. Among racial and ethnic groups in Wisconsin, rates of children in poverty range from 11 percent to 44 percent with American Indian/Alaskan Native children faring the worst and white children faring the best. "And so I think this provides good data for having those types of conversations". "So even though we may not see progress in the short term, that doesn't mean that there won't be progress in the long-term".
"Once we understand what the gaps are, at least we know where to shoot, but it requires not just government involvements, it requires a lot of different stakeholders".
