The slots in the NCAA women's basketball tournament bracket have been filled and CT is the first overall seed.
On the top end of the bracket sits No. 12 Oklahoma, which features two seniors to watch - center Vionise Pierre-Louis (15.7 ppg, 8.8 rpg) and guard Gabbi Ortiz (12.2 ppg, 80 3pg) - as the Sooners were a surprise pick to make the NCAA Tournament for the 19th straight year.
UConn coach Geno Auriemma said the respect for those teams is a step forward in the women's game and he believes mid-major teams will make some noise in this year's tournament. The Gamecocks are the two-seed.
The Huskies (32-0), led by Katie Lou Samuelson (17.9 ppg), haven't lost since Mississippi State broke their 111-game winning streak in last year's Final Four.
The women's Final Four begins March 30 in Columbus, Ohio, with the championship game taking place April 1.
The bracket, released Monday night, has Notre Dame, Louisville and Mississippi State as the other top region seeds. This spring marks the first time the team has earned a No. 1 seed, and with both SC and UConn on the opposite side of the bracket in the same region, the Bulldogs wouldn't face either of their toughest opponents until the championship, should they make it.
UConn women receive No. 1 seed again, will open vs. St. Francis (Pa.)
"Next time I see him", Brey told the Tribune of Johnson, "I'm punching him in the face."UConn, which has been a No. 1 seed every year since 2007, opens against 16th-seeded St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday morning.
Mississippi State is a No. 1 seed for the first time in school history. This might be one of coach Muffet McGraw's finest accomplishments as Notre Dame lost four pivotal players to injury, but only three games on the season. 'Notre Dame did have the top strength of schedule in the country and they did have the best strength of schedule in the country and they had nine more top-50 wins than Baylor and those were the reason that the committee put Notre Dame on that one line and Baylor on that two line'. The Ducks made one of the great runs a year ago reaching the Elite Eight for the first time in program history.
The Ducks potentially could stay out west and play in Spokane, where coach Kelly Graves spent many years as Gonzaga's coach. The Lexington Regional is stacked with former NCAA Tournament winners with Baylor the two-seed, Tennessee the three and Stanford the four. "Hopefully, some of those UConn fans who got so excited about what we were able to do past year will stay for the second part of Saturday's doubleheader and root us on".
Louisville won the ACC for the first time this season. The Cardinals open up against Boise State.
Oklahoma got in the field with a 16-14 record - the fewest wins for an at-large team since 2005 - a day after the Oklahoma men got an at-large berth with an 18-13 record and losses in 11 of their final 15 games. Purdue, Rutgers, Southern Cal and West Virginia were the first four teams out.
Their only defeat came at the hands of SC in the SEC tournament final, a result that the Gamecocks used as a statement of intent.More news: Pro-Kurdish protests close King's Cross and Manchester Piccadilly stations
