According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) at least a third of the United Kingdom population have varicose veins, and women are more likely than men to develop them.
They happen when the valves in the veins separate, enabling blood to stream in reverse and gather at specific focuses. Compared with the control group, the hazard ratios for the varicose veins group were 5.30, 1.73, and 1.72, respectively, for DVT, PE, and PAD.
Pre-eclampsia during pregnancy may increase a woman's risk of heart disease later in life.
"Among adults diagnosed with varicose veins, there was a significantly increased risk of incident DVT; the findings for PE and PAD are less clear due to the potential for confounding", the researchers wrote in their study.
Varicose veins are not merely a cosmetic or symptomatic concern, because they may be associated with increasing risk of more serious disease.Overall, the HR for the patients with varicose veins with PAD was 1.72 (95% CI 1.68-1.77) compared with the control group. Dr. Gregory Piazza, cardiovascular medicine specialist at Brigham and Women's Hospital, said the study has a "number of strengths", including the large number of people studied.
They suggest one possible explanation is that people with varicose veins have increased levels of inflammation or blood clotting abnormalities. Because of the nature of the study, researchers did not intervene and were unable to control other elements and factors that may have impacted the outcomes.
Further research needs to be conducted to improve understanding of the link between PE, PAD and varicose veins. Benefits associated with varicose vein treatment providing effectiveness of cost and time, low risk of postoperative complications and, painless procedure is expected to augment the growth of global varicose vein treatment over the forecast period.
"True healthy people are not included in this study at all", Kindzelski said, since the researchers drew data from medical records using codes.
