Bucs release Doug Martin

With Martin's release, the Bucs create $6.75M in cap space. HIs injury history includes a torn shoulder labrum in 2013 following a Pro Bowl season the year before.

The Bucs announced on Tuesday that the team has finally said goodbye to long-time running back Doug Martin after he failed to live up to expectations for back-to-back seasons.

General manager Jason Licht appeared to foreshadow the move earlier in mid-January, saying Martin "just wasn't ever the same" following his suspension.

The decision is a financial one. Charles Sims and Jacquizz Rodgers have turned up in some moments as good complements to Martin, but only Rodgers is under contract in 2018.

Depending on how they handle a few of their own impending free agents, the New England Patriots could have a need at running back this offseason. Lately, though, he hasn't been at his elite level. He was named to the Pro Bowl twice during his career with the Bucs.

In 2015, Martin finished with 1,402 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns.

He recorded just 406 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 2.9 yards per carry. He was finally given the chance to play later in the year, and he racked up 335 rushing yards in the team's last five games.

There will likely be plenty of suitors for the 29-year-old running back. It will be interesting to see if he gets to continue his National Football League career for a seventh year, obviously with another team in 2018.
