A tearful Lindsey Vonn vowed Friday (Feb 9) to "lay it all out" at her fourth Olympics to honour her late grandfather, the inspiration behind her stellar ski career.
"I know, like, it's a comparison between sports, and I don't think there's a sport in the Winter Olympics where you can even win 23 medals across three or four Olympics, but, yeah, I could never imagine myself even in the same sentence as Michael Phelps", she said. The gold she returned in Vancouver eight years ago was the first by an American woman in the downhill.
But she was rocked in her home life with the death in November of her grandfather, Don Kildow, aged 88, and was reduced to tears when the subject was raised in her press conference.
She struggled, and it's clear that these emotions, so close to the surface, will provide the backdrop for her performances, which don't get under way until the Super-G on February 17.
"It's not so challenging to make it down and I don't think we're going to see a lot of crashes", he said.
"She's a definitely a bigger star than me", said Vonn, unabashedly making goo-goo eyes at Lucy, as her faithful companion sat at the foot of stage, where the greatest downhill racer in USA history took measure of all the big victories and painful injuries in her career.
The 22-year-old slalom gold medalist from Sochi has racked up 10 World Cup victories this season but has managed to reach the podium just once in her last six races, a disappointing dip she attributed to fatigue.
"I'm not going to be nervous, I know he's looking out for me and that gives me some peace of mind". "I miss him so much".More news: Justice Department's No. 3 official steps down

Oh, the Olympic paparazzi will love this: Lindsey Vonn brought the current love of her life to the Winter Games.
"I don't think I can contend for a medal so there's no point".
"She's usually in the hotel room whenever I'm racing", Vonn said.
It's just a girl and her dog on a great big Olympic adventure. "I miss him so much". Now, one more time, she encounters a different set of circumstances.
She has won 10 of 23 World Cup races she entered this season - including five slalom victories and two in giant slaloms, her best two disciplines - and went 5-for-5 from January 1-9.
"I'm feeling much better, much more like myself", a relaxed Shiffrin told reporters on Saturday. I always have her with me.
The men and women will compete on the same course for the first time in Olympic history. I got Lucy, she travels with me everywhere. As he raised his family on a farm in rural Milton, Wisconsin, he built a tiny ski hill with a tow rope. She has skied through personal strife and physical disaster. Before Vonn headed back onto the World Cup circuit last fall, she made what has become an annual sojourn back to their simple house, where she sleeps on a house in the basement. Linsdey Vonn has been an Olympian since she was a teenager.
