Speaking at a daily press briefing, UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said intense airstrikes and shelling on the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta have reportedly killed dozens of civilians and injured many more over the last 48 hours.
"The Russian airstrikes concentrated on the town of Saraqeb, the closest to the Abu Al-Duhur military airport (captured by the Syrian government in January 2018)".
The United Nations is investigating reports that chemical weapons were used in rebel-held areas of Syria, as Russian Federation blocked a Security Council statement condemning gas attacks in the war-ravaged country.
"This was the highest civilian toll in Syria in almost nine months, and one of the bloodiest days for Eastern Ghouta in several years", Abdel Rahman told AFP.
The lead investigator of a United Nations -mandated Commission of Inquiry on Syria said his team was looking into the reports that bombs containing weaponized chlorine were used on two recent occasions in the town of Saraqeb, in Idlib, and Douma, in eastern Ghouta.
Eastern Ghouta and Idlib, a northern province where violence also flared this week, are both so-called de-escalation zones under a deal past year meant to pave the way towards an end to the conflict. The ongoing fighting and deliberate obstructions by forces were preventing aid organizations from reaching civilians, it said.

Idlib was also a destination for thousands of people evacuated from rebel-held territories under agreements with the Syrian regime. It said one of its workers was also killed by an airstrike while responding to a call for rescue in the area.
Concerning recent remarks from the USA on establishing a security zone in Syria, Çavuşoğlu said Ankara can not trust the US since Washington had not kept its promises.
The military also said that only terror targets were being destroyed and the "utmost care and sensitivity" were being used to not harm civilians. War crimes experts within the organisation are, separately, investigating claims civilians have been targeted with chlorine gas bombs in in various rebel-held towns within the war-torn country.
On Wednesday, the Syrian army said it intercepted an Israeli attack on a military position in Jamraya, northwest of Damascus.
"When (US Secretary of State Rex) Tillerson comes we will share these ideas with him sincerely, we will share our expectations", he said.
The fight ended with Filipov's move, according to the ministry: He blew himself up using a hand grenade. It was the first time a Russian jet was shot down over Syria since Russia launched its air campaign on Assad's behalf. The UN has named the Afrin region led by Syrian Kurds as one of the areas of interest.
