Sony revealed all of the fresh features and changes on the way for the PS4 by way of an official PlayStation Blog post today, with the announcement starting out by detailing a "Play Time Management" feature that allows family managers to control the amount of time child family members can play on the system. Sony has now announced what we can expect from this upcoming major update. It will also display who is now online. With the option enabled, games will be rendered at a higher resolution, before being downscaled to match the TV. The new firmware will introduce several changes and conveniences in the user interface plus a supersampling mode for PlayStation 4 Pro that accommodates those who don't have a TV supporting 4K resolution. Though not applicable to all games, it still allows PS4 Pro owners who haven't upgraded their television to see an improvement to image clarity.
Import your own images to the PS4 through a USB to use as a background image.
Meanwhile, the update lets you import your own images via USB stick to use as custom wallpapers. This section also shows games that have been purchased, but not downloaded. This means you can hide all those betas, trials, and demos that you didn't like.
The mightily useful Quick Menu is also receiving some quality-of-life improvements, including the ability to quickly access specific friends in your custom list via the pulldown menu under the Friends tab.
Listening to music on the PS4 will now feature Quick Menu shortcuts. What do you think about these new options coming via PlayStation 4 System Software 5.50?
Here's what's coming with PS4's big 5.50 update
When you're on the Media Player or the USB Music Player, "triangle" will work as the shortcut for play or pause, and the "square" button as the volume control.
The signature feature is Play Time Management, which is created to give adult family members more control over how long kids are active on the PlayStation Network.
For example, a parent can decide that their child is allowed to play their console for a total of two hours each day, but not play at all after 10pm. Simply head to Settings Select Theme Custom Select Image USB Storage Device. The family managers/guardians also have the option to add extra game time via their smartphone or PC, ' said Sony. Sony did not specify when the full release of firmware 5.50 would roll out to all users.
If your Notifications tab makes you feel like you're in a particularly bad episode of Hoarders, you'll be glad to know that update 5.5 will make it possible to permanently delete any and all old notifications. If your PS Plus membership is expired, a PS Plus icon with a lock shows up next to your game so you know which games you can play if you re-subscribe.More news: German parties resume talks over coalition government deal
