The controversy over Apple's "throttling" technique erupted late a year ago, when a Reddit user discovered his old iPhone instantly regained computing performance when he installed a new battery.
Developer updates, or betas, are how Apple tests out new features and software updates before broadly rolling them out to the public.
Speaking with ABC News following the company's announcement that it would bring back billions of dollars in profit stored overseas, Apple CEO Tim Cook said a new iOS developer update will arrive next month that will allow iPhone users to see their battery's health.
"We're going to give people the visibility of the health of their battery", Cook said. It wasn't necessarily the fact that Apple implemented the system, rather it was because iPhone users didn't know about it and weren't given a choice whether if they wanted to participate in the plan or not. Apple's solution to avoid this issue is to slow the phone down.
Next iOS Update Will Allow Users To Remove Performance Restrictions Due to Poor Battery Health
The issue struck a nerve on social media, where many voiced a theory that Apple intentionally slows down older phones to encourage customers to buy new ones.
The company says it does that to keep older iPhones in a reliable working state to prevent unexpected restarts, but it's controversial because Apple hadn't made clear that it was affecting iPhone performance this way.
For those who choose to disable the performance throttling, Cook was quick to mention that it's not something Apple recommends, as old, degraded batteries can cause the phone to suddenly shutdown. In the meantime, users can take advantage of a discounted battery replacement, which will help to circumvent the need for performance-throttling.
In December, Apple released an open letter explaining the updates, and promised a number of changes, including the upcoming software update and a reduction in price of the company's battery exchange program for users with affected models.More news: Putin takes dip in icy Russian lake on Epiphany
