According to Crunchbase, the deal happened in August, although Google has still not commented on the acquisition. This also opens up the possibility of placing even more components in future devices, like larger battery.
On Wednesday night, a report revealed on Bloomberg quietly that Google acquisition of "Redux" could have major implications down the road. The transfer of shares was confirmed on December 13 based on United Kingdom regulatory filings.
"Redux has developed breakthrough technology which transforms the user experience by bringing surfaces to life with Sound and Touch", it said in an "about us" section of the company. Stereo sound coming directly from the screens could make the phone look and sound slicker, and customers nostalgic for buttons and physical keyboards will spring for the improved haptic feedback.
Redux raised $5m in March 2017 from investors including Arie Capital.More news: Mueller adds cyber crimes prosecutor to Russian Federation probe team

Some of Redux's tech has already appeared in PCs and vehicle infotainment systems. The Pixel 2 in particular had very thick bezels that's very much the same size as its predecessor. For Panel Audio, they are using special actuators that "deliver naturalistic wide-frequency-range audio from a panel or display (without micro-speakers and apertures) - providing a versatile and robust overall solution". While the external space a speaker demands is one thing, it also occupies room inside the phone.
At the CES consumer electronics conference in Las Vegas this week, Google is heavily promoting its voice-controlled speakers that compete with Amazon's Echo device.
Redux specialised in transforming any surface into a speaker and Google purchased the company late a year ago.
Redux has demoed its technology on smartphone and tablet displays, in the past, and that very well may be Google Inc (GOOG)'s core intended use for this exciting technology.
