Houston Texans GM Rick Smith is taking an extended leave of absence from the team, according to a report.
Alex Marvez of Sporting News reported Sunday that Texans head coach Bill O'Brien was set to force owner Bob McNair to choose between keeping him or Smith for 2018 and beyond.
ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted that Tiffany Smith has been undergoing treatments in Arizona; Rick Smith has been traveling back and forth to care for her. "I remain committed to our quest to bring a championship to the city of Houston, yet my family needs me now and they are my priority". "They put in a lot of time, they put it on the line for us in a pretty violent game and so that means a lot to me when they say that".
Texans likely to keep Bill O'Brien as head coach, sources say
Plenty has been out of O'Brien's control this season, who has otherwise produced a largely successful string of seasons for the Texans since taking over prior to the 2014-15 season. O'Brien recently said that he would "never" quit his job as Houston's head coach, and fortunately for him, it looks like he won't even have to worry about that right now.
"I don't have any comment on that", O'Brien said Sunday. I'm the head coach.
Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle cited many sources about the clash of egos between the two and the tension that has surrounded the squad because the two dislike each other that much. He also would come with Bill Belichick's approval from his days on the Patriots staff. O'Brien is 31-32 in four seasons.More news: Eagles Lose to Cowboys as Starters Rest in Regular Season Finale
