A number of carriers, smartphone makers, and component manufacturers (Qualcomm, Orange, T-Mobile, AT&T, Samsung, ZTE, Sprint, Telefonica, Verizon, Sony, Nokia, MediaTek, and Huawei to name a few) have expressed their excitement and commitment for a future with 5G wireless.
Sprint hopes to deploy wide-scale 5G in late 2019 and touted the largest block of under-6 GHz spectrum in the USA, while T-Mobile is aiming to roll out 5G across the country in 2020. Once they're released, vendors, including Ericsson, Qualcomm, and others, will be able to start making equipment that will ultimately power 5G networks.
New 5G technologies are making spectrum bands above 24GHz, known as mmWave, available for mobile broadband communications for the first time. The second-largest telecom company in the United States has been running small trials of its 5G network in Austin over the course of 2017. However, KT evaluated that the company was leading the way in 5G global standardization by building a communication network for a tentative 5G service at Incheon worldwide Airport and in Pangyo, Gwanghwamun, Gangnam Daero, Pyeongchang, Gangneung, Bokwang and Jinbu as official telecommunication service provider for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games.
Deutsche Telekom CTO Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, said: "We view both the Non-Standalone and Standalone modes of New Radio as equally important for the completeness of the 5G standard specification".
At this point, it's hard to know what 5G is truly going to deliver when it arrives, because all we have to go on right now are specs on paper.
The details of 5G network specifications suggest that it will go to cover a broad range of the spectrum, ranging from 600 and 700 MHz bands to the millimeter wave portion of the spectrum at 50 GHz.
