Apple's Finisar investment is part of its Advanced Manufacturing Fund program that will invest a billion dollars in domesting manufacturing companies. These power numerous newer features Apple has introduced in the last few generations of iPhone, such as the proximity-sensing capabilities of AirPods and the True-Depth camera on the iPhone X.
"This investment shows the company is doubling down on AR again, and locks down the VCSEL market, which will make it tough for other smartphone players to compete in AR", he wrote. In the months leading up to the iPhone X's release, the corporation struggled to meet Apple's demand for hardware for the device's front-facing TrueDepth camera, and had to be dropped from the company's roster of manufacturers.

500 new jobs Apple said in a feature posted on its own web site that it hoped the support would transform both the Sherman site, which has been idle since 2012 when previous owner Texas Instruments mothballed the facility, and the local area.
